A team from Lancaster University has compared reefs in the Chagos archipelago, some surrounding islands that are rat free, and others on which rats have been introduced. The rat free islands have significantly higher populations of sea birds.

Outrage over blue whale killing by Icelandic whalers grows

Outrage is growing virally since images of a slaughtered blue whale (most likely) have surfaced online. The whale was killed by the Icelandic whaling company Hvalur hf, run by Kristján Loftsson, as part of their annual whaling hunt. So far the company has killed 22 whales, including the whale in question. The company insists the whale is a hybrid between a blue whale, an internationally protected species since the 1960’s, and a fin whale, the species the company targets. Experts believe otherwise.

Coral protections lead UNESCO to remove Belize barrier reef from World Heritage Sites in Danger

In a victory for coral, UNESCO has removed the Belize barrier reef from the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger. The barrier reef of Belize is the largest barrier reef system in the Northern Hemisphere. The reef was included on the list of World Heritage sites in 1996, but then included on the list of sites in danger in 2009 due to oil exploration and mangrove destruction for real estate. Belize has implemented a moratorium on oil exploration in the entire maritime system of the country, which lead to the barrier reefs removal from the danger list. The purpose of the list is to bring awareness to threats facing World Heritage sites and to hopefully encourage corrective behavior.
