Fisheye FIX LED1000DX and LED500DX focus lights released
Our sponsor and friends at Reef Photo & Video recently sent us photos of the new (and now shipping!) Fisheye FIX LED1000DX and LED500DX focusing lights, successors to the very popular FIX HG20DX halogen light. With an 85-degree beam angle, and 9x and 4x 3w high-intensity LEDs, respectively, the focus lights provide over 90 minutes of burn time at full power and advertise a lamp life of 10,000 hours.

Wetpixel Bahamas oceanic white-tip expedition 2009 returns to port
Alex Mustard and crew have returned from the Wetpixel oceanic white-tip shark expedition to the Bahamas. There is no doubt that we will start seeing dozens of images posted in the trip coverage thread in the Wetpixel forums. Jeff Hartog was first, posting a teaser image of an oceanic white-tip shark from the boat an hour out of West Palm Beach. So far, Dr. Mustard has only posted oceanic pig images, which are always very entertaining.
Keep your eyes on that thread! It’s going to be a good one.
Wetpixel seeks volunteers for Long Beach Scuba Show, May 30-31
UPDATE: Wetpixel will be sharing booth 522 with Light & Motion. Light & Motion will have on display their new Bluefin S10 for the Canon S10 camcorder. The compact Bluefin S10 features an unprecedented control set for an underwater housing by offering white-balance, exposure, gain, focus, lighting and other camcorder control directly from the Bluefin’s infra-red control handles.
Come say hi to us! We’ll have all issues of Wetpixel Quarterly available.
Panasonic DMC-GH1 continues the ViDSLR revolution
Panasonic has released the DMC-GH1 DSLR with manual controls settings for HD movie capability and continuous recording, breaking 2 of the biggest criticisms of the new hybrid camera category. The GH1 captures HD in 1080/24p and 720/50/60p in 17mbps AVCHD Psf in 60i. On the stills front, the 4/3 mount camera has a 12.1 mp resolution with anti-dust sensor and face recognition AF. Priced at $1499, it is a feature packed camera that beats the competitors for HD video in DSLR, ViDSLR if you will. Best of all, it’s available in flashy red or bling gold!
Wetpixel POTW contests open again
Apologies for the lack of a Picture of the Week contest this week! Our queue ran dry and no one was fast enough to think of more competition themes. I’ve put a competition online today (topic: sharks and rays), which will run until end of day Sunday.
Be sure to check out some of the recent POTW winners. There are some amazing images in there!

Wetpixel Flickr group logo competition
We’ve got a great new team of administrators over at the Wetpixel Flickr group, and they’re taking charge over there. The current Flickr group administrators are vazuw, Cal Mero, Ryan Pedlow, Gudge, rtski, Jaw’s Dad, Adam Hanlon and echeng.
We are currently running a competition for images to adorn a new logo that will be placed on the front page of the Flickr group! To do this we need underwater photographs of the highest quality. See this Flickr discussion for information on how to enter. Remember that all images added to our group pool end up on the collaborative slideshow page!
Updates from the field: Wetpixel oceanic white-tip expedition 2009
Alex Mustard is currently leading a Wetpixel expedition to photograph oceanic white-tip sharks in the Bahamas. Like last year, Alex and the guests onboard have been posting images from the days leading up to the trip departure, and will likely be posting images as soon as they get an internet connection upon returning to the West End marina at the end of the trip.
So far, they’ve photographed long-arm octopi, mating horseshoe crabs, jawfishes with eggs, and more. Click through to see Alex’s photos and for a video of Alex in action.
