Sony announces the α9 full frame mirrorless camera
Sony has announced the α9 full frame mirrorless camera. It features a 24.2 MP 35mm full-frame stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS sensor with a BIONZ X processing engine giving a native ISO range of 100 – 51200. It has a hybrid AF system with a claimed 25% faster performance than that of the α7R II. Video is 4K, with the camera using full pixel readout without pixel binning to collect 6K of information, oversampling it to produce 4K footage.
Florida manatee moved off the endangered species list
The Florida manatee has been moved off the endangered species list. Late last month the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that the status of the Florida manatee will be upgraded from endangered to “threatened”. Study records humpback feeding behavior
WWF-Australia reports that Australian and US scientists working off the Antarctic Peninsula in the Gerlache Strait have managed to attach non-invasive camera tags with 3D motion sensors onto humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). The devices were stuck on their backs for 24 to 48 hours and recorded feeding behavior, including the animals lunge-feeding into tight swarms of krill.

Report: Imaging Products at ADEX 2017
The Asian Dive Exhibition (ADEX), held at Suntec City, Singapore between 7and 9 April this year attracted over 60,000 visitors. Among these was Wetpixel’s Drew Wong, who scoured the show floor to find all that was new and exciting in underwater imaging equipment. His report lists the results of his searches, effectively all the new imaging products that have been released since DEMA in 2016.
Sir Richard Branson set to sink artificial reef in British Virgin Islands
Sir Richard Branson is set to sink an artificial reef in the British Virgin Islands, close to Necker Island, his well known vacation island in the BVI’s. The Kodiak Queen, one of the five ships that survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, has been prepared and outfitted with a giant Kraken sculpture to be sunk to become the B.V.I. Art Reef. The artificial reef will be sunk just south of Mountain Point in Virgin Gorda.
Shrimp species named after Pink Floyd
A new species of shrimp has been named after prog rock group Pink Floyd. Described in the journal Zootaxa, Synalpheus pinkfloydi is a new pistol shrimp species from the tropical eastern Pacific. It uses its outsized pink claw to generate sounds that exceed 210 decibels to stun prey. According to the scientists that made the discovery, the name is based on the shrimp’s claw color, rather than the noise it creates.
