Dominican Republic to import “show” dolphins from Japan slaughter pens

A local Dominican Republic society against animal cruelty (SODOPRECA) is gathering signatures in support of a petition to the president of Dominican Republic and the Environmental Minister. This petition is requesting that the government approve a ban on the import of dolphins into the country.

In a related Press Release issued on January 18, 2007, Richard O’Barry, a marine mammal specialist with the Save Japan Dolphins Coalition, referring to the capture of twelve dolphins while the rest of the pod was butchered, stated “This was one of the most violent dolphin captures that I have ever witnessed in my 45 years of working with dolphins.

Eric Cheng photograph of Jellyfish Lake winner in World In Focus

An underwater photograph of Mastigias sp. jellyfish in Jellyfish Lake, Palau, taken by Wetpixel Editor Eric Cheng, is a winner in the Wilderness Photography category of this year’s National Geographic Traveller and Photo District News’s World in Focus professional photography contest.

The winning images are scheduled to be featured in the February 2007 edition of Photo District News, and will also be displayed in November at the World in Focus Gallery at PhotoPlus Expo in New York.

Canon announces EOS-1D Mark III digital SLR

Canon today announced the 10fps EOS-1D Mark III, the “world’s fastest digital SLR.” With a new 10.1 megapixel, 1.3x crop CMOS sensor, the camera is the first Canon dSLR to possess a Live View 3” LCD and Digic III. The Integrated Cleaning System first released in the Digital Rebel XTi is also present.

The EOS-1D Mark III Digital SLR is the product of a “reset to zero” design process; absolutely everything was re-evaluated,” and new features include ‘highlight tone priority,’ to extend the dynamic range of highlights by a stop (exciting for underwater photographers), and ‘silent drive mode,’ for reducing shutter noise.

The camera is predicted to be available in April 2007 and sell for USD$3999.

New online underwater show TheUnderwaterChannel.tv

Launched in late January, TheUnderwaterChannel.tv is an online underwater TV show created by Nicholas Claxton, with the support of Tim Ecott, Monty Halls, and Peter Scoones.

TheUnderwaterChannel.tv will broadcast short films about the challenges facing the world’s coral reefs and other natural phenomena…from the Great Barrier Reef to the Caribbean, and from the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean, programs will focus on the natural history and fascinating marine life that lives off the coral reefs - as well as the scientists monitoring their well-being.

The site is currently running a 10-week pilot that is available for viewing at TheUnderwaterChannel.tv.

Jack and Sue Drafahl to hold digital workshop at NCUPS meeting

The Northern California Underwater Photographic Society (NCUPS) will be hosting Jack and Sue Drafahl for an underwater digital photography workshop on March 10, 2007.

There will be both morning and afternoon sessions, and the pair will cover such topics as improving composition, animal behavior, and lightning techniques, as well as applying Adobe Photoshop to underwater photography. The event costs $75USD for the morning session, or $100USD for both (with lunch included), and there is a discount for NCUPS members.
