Sea&Sea announces Japanese produced YS-D2 strobe
Sea&Sea has announced a Japanese produced version of their YS-D2 strobe. The specifications and features of the “new” YS-D2J are the same as those of the original YS-D2, which was produced in China. There have been reports of reliability issues with the original version and it seems the release of the YS-D2J is in response to this.
Scientists prove penguins regularly feast on jellyfish
In a paper published in Frontiers in Ecology last month, scientists have shown that several species of penguins regularly feed on jellyfish. This find is surprising as it was traditionally thought that penguins subsist primarily on nutrient dense foods like fish. Jellyfish are over 90 percent water and mean that the penguins expend a lot of energy for not a lot of caloric payback for this food source.
Thousands evacuated in Vanuatu as volcano threatens eruption
11,000 residents of Ambae Island in Vanuatu as the Manaro Voui volcano has begun emitting gas and volcanic ash, stoking fears of an imminent eruption. Ambae island is one of 65 islands that are inhabited in Vanuatu. The government ordered a complete evacuation of all residents of Ambae. Bali has also seen evacuations due to volcanic activity in recent days as well as Mt Agung threatens eruption “at anytime”.
GoPro announces HERO6 action cam
GoPro has announced several new products including the HERO6 action cam. The latter features a new GP1 processor and captures 4K60 and 1080p240 video. It also has “advanced” image stabilization, improved dynamic range and low-light performance. It is waterproof to 33 feet (10 m). In addition, the company has launched the Fusion VR cam.

Scientists prove that Jellyfish sleep
In a paper published last week in the journal Current Biology, scientists have shown that at least some jellyfish sleep. This discovery is noteworthy as jellyfish are simple organisms that do not have brains, but rather a network of nerves. To prove that the jellyfish they were studying sleep, the scientists needed to prove three behavioral criteria, which they did.
Blue Planet 2: Attenborough on the new series, climate change and optimism
The BBC’s Blue Planet 2 premieres today at an invitation only event at the British Film Institute IMAX cinema in London, UK. Greenpeace, in their Unearthed blog has posted an interview with the program’s creator, Sir David Attenborough about “On climate change, optimism and Blue Planet II.”
