Hurricane Maria to land on the Leeward Islands tonight

Hurricane Maria on Wetpixel

Hurricane Maria’s strength has intensified to category 4 and is now due to land on the Leeward Islands later tonight. Many of these islands have already been badly affected by hurricane Irma, and it seems that this second storm will wreak additional havoc. From the Wetpixel community to those in the storm’s path: We hope and pray that you will be safe and that the storm will pass you by with minimal impact on your homes and businesses.

As of right now, hurricane warnings have been issued for Guadeloupe, Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, Martinique, St Lucia and the US and British Virgin Islands, while a hurricane watch is in effect for Puerto Rico, St Martin, St Barts, Saba, St Eustatius and Anguilla.

This second hurricane highlights the need for the underwater imaging community to support those so badly affected by the storm. When we visit these areas, we rely on them to provide the facilities that allow us to practice our art. Wetpixel launched an appeal for donations to Direct Relief who are responding with medical assistance to affect communities. Please consider contributing.
