Japan suspended from world aquarium association

The Dodo reports that the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums has suspended the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums due to concerns that they are obtaining dolphins from the infamous drive hunts at Taji, Wakayama, Japan. This amounts to Japanese aquaria and dolphinariums no longer being recognized by any international bodies. The hunt was the subject of the documentary “The Cove” whose director, Louis Psihoyos stated:

This is one of the best Earth Day presents for those working against the Taiji dolphin slaughter,” and then went on to say; “you know we’re another step closer to shutting down ‘The Cove’ when the entire world of zoos and aquariums turns its back on the Japanese industry for supporting this heinous and barbarous hunt.”
