Underwater photographer Ryo Minemizu wins 5th Nikkei National Geographic Photo Award
Underwater photographer Ryo Minemizu has won the 5th Annual Nikkei National Geographic Photo Award for his series titled The Secret World of Plankton. Minimize has spent the last 20 years diving and photographing larval ocean creatures off the coast of Japan. In that time he has perfected a technique that captures animals maturing from their larval stage to adult. After a high tide, once the sun goes down, Minemizu sets up 30 LED lights on tripods to attract the almost invisible organisms, waiting sometimes for hours at a time.
