Sony has announced the α9 full frame mirrorless camera. It features a 24.2 MP 35mm full-frame stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS sensor with a BIONZ X processing engine giving a native ISO range of 100 – 51200. It has a hybrid AF system with a claimed 25% faster performance than that of the α7R II. Video is 4K, with the camera using full pixel readout without pixel binning to collect 6K of information, oversampling it to produce 4K footage.

Sony announces SSDs for external recorders

Sony has announced the release of new solid state drives (SSD) specifically designed for use with external recorders like the Atomos Ninja 2. The SV-GS96 960GB model has a 2,400 terabyte rating will allow the drive to be fully written on five days a week for ten years without failing, while the 480GB model (SV-GS48) gives about half that durability. Both models feature data protection technology and a special connecter with 6 times the durability of SATA connectors.

Sony has announced their SF-G series SD cards that feature a claimed write speed of 299MB/ and a read speeds of 300MB/s. The company has achieved these speeds by improving the physical architecture and by using a new algorithm that “prevents loss of speed in data writing even after repeating burst shooting, and contributes to the camera’s speed of burst shooting.”

Sony introduces the FDR-X3000R and HDR-AS300R Action Cams

Sony has introduced the FDR-X3000R and HDR-AS300R Action Cams. The former features 4K capture with the latter HD, but both are equipped with Balanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization. The have a 0.5 inch 8.2MP Exmor R™ CMOS sensor with “big pixels” designed for video with a native 16:9 aspect ratio and a BIONZ X™ processor and their lens is a 26mm focal length with a fixed f2.8 aperture. There is a digital crop function that offers 17mm, 23mm and 32mm equivalent settings. A waterproof housing is supplied with both cameras.

Sony has announced the HXR-NX5R compact HD professional camcorder. It offers XAVC-S at 50Mbps or AVCHD/DV recording. It has three HD 1/2.8 Exmor sensors and a 20X zoom G lens and offers 1080p60 output via a 3G-SDI, along with HDMI and composite outputs. Sony has also released the RM-30BP remote controller, which can control most camera functions.

No Film School has posted details of Sony’s new X-OCN RAW file format. It offers a compromise between file size and quality that Sony say is visually identical to F55 RAW footage. It will be available in “both ST (Standard) and LT (Light) versions, with LT coming in at about 1/3 the data rate of traditional RAW for the same settings.”
