Filmmaker Michael Maes has shot some stunning footage of reef mantas (Manta alfredi) feeding on plankton at night. He describes the shoot:
“Late night, after all the operators left the site at the Sheraton in Kona, bringing their customers to the world famous “Kona Manta night dive” site, we went in the water with those magical creatures on our own. We attracted plankton, the favorite diet of the reef manta, towards our boat, the Kona Aggressor II. The plankton, which is attracted towards (moon)light, in its turn attracts the mantas. This spectacle gave us opportunity to have magical moments with these graceful giants.”
Michael shot this with a Canon 1DC in 4K Canon Log with ambient lighting.
