When Jack Preston took his drone out for only the second time, he did not expect to find Orcas hunting in the crystal clear shallows around the Mercury Islands in New Zealand. The Orcas of this area hunt stingrays in the shallows collectively, one whale pulling a stingray out from a hiding spot and another fully biting it.
This is what Preston had to say about the capture: “Wildlife photography is very opportunistic and luck based. You can’t just say ‘okay today I’m going out to shoot orca’, we were just in the right place at the right time and the conditions that day were perfect for photography and for flying the drone.”
