Perry,

This was a rare fine, a purple lacy rhinopia. It was the first one that one of our guide has seen in his years of diving. We went back the next day and it was not there at "Sun View".

Hi Elmer :

So lucky you are to find purple lacy rhinopias !! where is located the dive site " sun view " ? which resort did you dive with ? the name of the DM to find rhinopias ? Thanks

Hi troporobo :

About Donsol diving , many whale shark there, but very difficulty to get good pictures because no scuba, poor visibility. I first visit donsol in 2007 with good pictures because I use spair air ( small tank for snorkeling, free diving use ), but it is not alloed now. I suggest South leyte bay diving during March--May to have higher chance to dive ( scuba is OK , good visibility ) with whale shark .

i did see my first whaleshark in bohol in janurary, but was very distant
am off on a liveaboard to the red sea in july so maybe i will get lucky there
not really got into macro yet,and still cant decide wether macro wet lenses (inon)are worth having(i know most of you guys use slr,so probably dont have an opinion) i will check previous posts to see what i can find.

Giz,

Leyte is likely your best bet to see whale sharks, but the best time to go is late November to March. Time your trip around the full moon too as we had our best sightings +/- 2 days off the full moon and then dropped rapidly after that. The reefs of Southern Leyte are some of the best I've seen in the Philippines. Gorgeous walls, lots of soft coral. No big schools of fish though.

Anilao can be dived year round. There's a resident school of trevally at the Twin Rocks dive site. Macro is beyond compare and there are great Wide Angle opportunities there as well.

You can see a fair bit on my website, choose the Underwater Scenics, Underwater Critters and Aquatica Galleries.

Cheers

Perry, troporobo,

Scuba is NOT allowed in S.Leyte with the whale sharks. The rules stipulate that on a specific whale shark trip to anywhere, specifically either Sonok or Limasawa, upon spotting a whale shark, divers are NOT allowed to kit up and enter the water. IF however, during a dive at any spot, a whale shark comes by, that is ok. Some operations, esp the transient liveaboards regularly break these rules do not properly brief their guests, touch the sharks, and ruin everyones day.

Flash photography is still a no-go. They will dart off into the blue thus ending the interaction.

I live here, currently setting up a dive resort, so i will tread lightly around comercialism so you will have to listen to others recommendations about diving here.

Perry,

Peters and Sogod Bay Scuba are about a minutes walk apart, so both have great house reefs, although SBSR is a bit closer to the MPA at Longsoda'an. There are 3 dive sites accessible from the shore in front of the resorts, all very good. Peters is cheaper and more basic at the low end aiming for the travellers market upto reasonable AC rooms. SBSR are all AC and a bit more expensive at approx. 1500php a night, and dives at around 1300. There is also a new Japanese owned operation in that village, called Nova Jimbei, which caters more for the eastern menu. They are new and finding their feet so i cant comment on operations but the boat is smaller, more basic, but he may plan to upgrade soon.

Yeah the jetty is still only monday, wed, fri as it is the town pier and constantly used for fishing boats to bring ashore their cargo. Its only 4-5m deep so diving when they are moving around is a bit too much!

I hope to still be here in Dec (im presently diving with SBSR because i like their guides, especially Pedro, who has amazing eyes and is an allround nice bloke) so if u want another photographer buddy PM me.

Hi Francesco :

Yes, I use Nikon D2x camera + tokina 10-17 mm lens + kenko 1.4 x teleconverter + Nexus housing + Inon Z-240 strobe x 2 + short arm for macro wide-angle photography, but the dome is the same as 10-17 mm len use, but plus extension .

Hi Olly :

Thanks for your explanation and suggestion, I'll decide to dive with SBSR during Dec. 07-12 . I'll contact with them later.
