Bimini Hammerheads

In a few weeks I am going to be in Bimini for a quick dive to shoot Hammerhead sharks.  I will be shooting with a Sony RX100V in a Nauticam housing and the Nauticam WWL-1.  I would like to get some input on how to light the action, I have a few options available but since I'm only doing one dive I have to make a choice and live with it.

 

Option 1:  Standard two strobe setup using two Inon Z-240s.  Traditional setup, simple and familiar but I have to pause for the pop-up flash to recycle between frames.  Also as the action heats up (hopefully) the particulate in the water will make backscatter a real problem.

 

Option 2:  Use natural light with a magic filter.  This dive is not deep, around 15' of typically clear water.  One advantage of this approach is I can make use of the the camera 24 frames/sec for some great action sequences.

 

Option 3:  Use a pair of Sola 3800 movie lights.  I've never shot still using movie lights and I'm not sure if they will have the same coverage and quality of light like using my Inon strobes.

 

I leaning toward going with Option 2 and using natural light with a magic filter but I would appreciate feedback from some others on this forum.

How about plan C, shoot natural light in RAW and white balance later. If your exposure and depth is consistent then this should be achievable and you would be able to batch convert. You may need to do a levels tweak to complete the colour balance. This is the technique where you bring in the black and white pints to just touch the edge of the histogram in each colour channel.

The other option would be to put the strobes on and fire away, you get strobes when they are ready and natural light when they are not. The advantage of the strobes is to lighten up the shadows under the shark. If you shoot the strobes on top of the correct ambient exposure that should work to provide good exposure regardless of flash or not.

Ig you have the strobes in manual, you can also dial the flash exposure compensation right down on the built in to help improve recycle times. If you have custom modes available (saved presets) you could have one for natural light and one for flash and do a little of each. In this case you could save a custom or underwater white balance for natural light and switch to daylight white balance for when you are using the strobes.
