Sync cord capability

Do sync cords let the camera know when the strobes are ready to fire? Why don't they work with ttl?

HUH? Do you mean fiber optic or electrical sync. Electrical sync has run TTL protocols for more than 40 years. Fiber optic is another story altogether. Which do you mean.
