About Me

William Warmus

William Warmus explores how narratives emerge from the points of intersection between art, nature, and technology. The University of Chicago magazine described him as a classical modernist; The New York Times called him a Stylemaker.

Son of a Corning Incorporated glassblower, he studied with art critic Harold Rosenberg and philosopher Paul Ricoeur while at the University of Chicago, and is the author of more than a dozen books about art. He was advisor to the estate of the noted art critic Clement Greenberg.

Beneath the Sea

Since 1997, when Warmus explored the pristine coral reefs of Bligh Water in Fiji, he has focused on the aesthetics of the ocean realm.

Diving primarily in the South Pacific and Caribbean, his photograph of an exceptional octopus appeared on the cover of Ocean Realm in 2001. He edited the memoirs of pioneering diver Stan Waterman (2005) and wrote the screenplay for the movie Sensational Seas (2004); he also wrote the sequel and was the Art Director for Sensational Seas Two (2010). In an effort to interest more artists and divers in the aesthetics of the undersea world, Warmus taught the Ocean Seminar at Alfred University and as part of the Glass Art Society Conference in Corning, NY in 2009.

"Sea Glass: Aesthetic Lessons from Below the Surface" appeared in the March, 2010 issue of Glass magazine. Its an exploration of aesthetics as influenced by experiences underwater: mimicry, reticulate evolution, the benefits of a diverse ecosystem, and a suggestion for a new form of art criticism.

On March 27, 2010 he presented the seminar, "Sensational Seas Revisited," at the Beneath the Sea New York regional dive exposition, where he was recognized for his contribution to "The Art, Science, Sport and Environment of our World Beneath the Sea."
