+ 10 for ULCS!

As for going the cheap way; some times you get what you pay for and sometimes you don't!

#397113 Just Starting out...Rig Tips

Others on this thread have identified the better housings. The best method to finalize your choice is to get to a consumer dive show , or DEMA and hold each one and work the controls. This will make the choice for you.

#397112 Storing Batteries

I solved my potential problem by inserting a section of insulator between the base of the battery and the charger contact.

#397080 Lithium - Ion Battery

Posted by okuma on 05 July 2018 - 02:47 PM

Lithium - ion batteries are becoming more common in diving equipment, especially in U/W lights.

They pack a large amount of energy in a small volume and consequently are potentially dangerous.

The following video will raise your respect for these batteries; particularly in a flooded situation!

#392374 Nauticam Vacuum valve - how much vacuum?

Posted by okuma on 14 February 2018 - 10:47 PM

I believe you are overly concerned about this. We have Vivid units on our housings and use a small hand pump.

I pump till I get a green light and then two extra strokes. We do this 1/2 hour before diving and as long as it stays green, then good to go.

Over pumping will eventually cause your housing to collapse and eventually get sucked up into the pump!

#392144 1 Inch ball mounts o-ring size

Posted by okuma on 07 February 2018 - 07:39 PM

From ULCS web page:

""BUNA O-Ring, Size 2-209." If you can not locate o-rings at a plumbing store then your local hardware store, Lowes, Home Depot, ACE, OSH sell them in one-packs from Danco # 95. (The size is 15/16 X 11/16 x 1/8)."

#392073 air travel with strobes (air pressure effects)

Posted by okuma on 05 February 2018 - 08:09 PM

Underwater equipment is designed with O rings/seals for a higher ambient(outside) pressure than internal.

Air travel, even in pressurized planes results in a lower  than ground level pressure.

Consequently, you should always remove user accessed O rings.

Worst case condition you could pop a non accessable ring out of it's seat.

#391467 Upgrading from D300

Posted by okuma on 20 January 2018 - 04:13 PM

We just took possession of two Nikon D500 cameras and Subal housings from Reef Photo

They were ordered in late November during the time of many comments about Subal's financial problems.

We did not experience any problems.

Each was equipped with the Subal TTL and flash triggers. Reef set up and dialed in the TTL units and they are spot on.

This was our fourth set of Subal housings from Reef.

We are still using our original ports and ordered the new housings with the type 3 housing ring.

We are also on our second upgrade of Vivid vacuum systems. As a supplier, Vivid is one of the best - ranks up there with Reef !

Regardless of which housing you go with, I strongly recommend the Vivid.

The best tool to use is called a "strap wrench"

It uses a plastic or reinforced rubber strap to go around the cylindrical object and is the least damaging tool to use for this application. Usually available in auto parts store. I carry one with me on all trips. Handel has been shortened for eae of use and packing.
