HI folks, gee long time since I have been on here. :-)

Looks like lots of old threads gone but good to see a few familiar names still here.

Anyway the GH5 had me intrigued so I downloaded the clips I found in this thread to play around with.

Placed  them in a 10bit 1920/1080 EDIUS 8 Workgroup time line and applied its primary CC  filter to them, wow you can really push them.

The 3840/2160 138mbps 10 bit (29 and 24 frame files) could be played but i did have to drop the preview window res down.

I also slowed down the 29 and 24 frame files by 50% using the EDIUS Optical flow.

Then I rendered out a 1920/1080 35mbps H.264 file which was fast as EDIUS uses the H.264 encoder on the Intel chip.

I use the resample method Lanczos 3 for the down conversion to 1920/1080.

All this on a old Windows 7 i7-3.50 gig system with16gig ram.

Anyhow, the quality of the Gh5 is very good, now you got me thinking of a new underwater setup :-)

File I made is here if you want to download it.

Yeh, not many of us around mate:-)

It's been a long time indeed.

Must be time I got back into the water.

The quality of the GH5 looks awesome and be good for traveling.

Setting up a normal video camera in a housing it's just way over the top now days.

Been using EDIUS everyday for years now shooting realestate vids, never misses a beat.

I agree from my trials with the GH5 that manual WB works really well when shooting ambient light. Clips to follow....

How’s the clips coming? Still very interested in this.

Hi,

I've received my Nauticam GH5 housing a few days ago and I tried it yesterday.

I'm really pleased about the ergonomic of the housing, and the camera itself is really impressive.

I was in 4K 25p 422 10 bits Long GOP, auto ISO, aperture fixed, autofocus and dual stabilisation (no cropping stabilisation).

The surface was a little over-exposed, but with Premiere Pro I was able to restore the high lights.

I used profile Cine-D. Next dive I'll try other profiles, especially the HLG. I do not have the V-Log for the moment.

Here the video : https://youtu.be/vd3rwMUfMIg

Re: "... manual WB works really well when shooting ambient light. "
I did my first ocean dives with the GH5 in the Nauticam housing yesterday, here in Palau. MWB does work very well indeed, BUT don't forget the red filter. Below about 10m I found it to be essential. However, even in the very murky vis at the site known as Buoy 6, at about 4pm, the colours, including the reds, really popped even at 26m. I'm still using the same method as with my GH2, which works a lot better for me than a card. It's a piece of grey-white/translucent detergent bottle, held over the port, and pointed to the brightest part of the surface. It's like an expo-disc.
I'll post a clip after I get back.
Cheers,
Matt

Hey Davide, I think there's still a video on my vimeo page from a few years ago. Have a look (link in my signature).
The white balance on this cam is so good it's like my old 3-chip Sony,.... for which I paid about 1700 euros 12 years ago. Exactly what I paid for the GH5!
Right now the biggest challenge with the GH5 is deciding which settings to go for...
Ciao,
Matt

Hi Matt

I could not find UW video on your Vimeo page. I meant the disk in itself. Is it transparent and you MWB through it?

Davide, it's here I think:

You can't see through it, but it lets light through. If you look up "Expodisc" you'll see there's a topside product available for MWB, but it won't withstand use underwater.
Cheers,
Matt

When I was trying out different WB techniques a few years back, I was actually experimenting with one of those. I found them to be  pretty unusable underwater back then. But your experience may be different.

How does the low light performance differ from the gh4 to the gh5?
Thinking about getting the gh5 as the gh5s expectations kinda fell through with the removal of the IBIS

@Pajjpen - I'll post some clips after I get back. It's not feasible where we are now. I think the low light performance is significantly better than the GH2, but I don't know the GH4. Actually, I found that the test shots I did at 26m were a bit overexposed with auto ISO and exp compensation at 0. Of course, Palau on a sunny day is really seriously bright, not like a Belgian quarry....

Hi bubffm,

Thanks for the test. May I know approximately how deep were the lemon sharks at 02:18? The result is amazing.

Cheers

Here are some test clips showing the GH5 manual white balance performance/limitations.

https://vimeo.com/251117093

4k, 50 fps, 8-bit.

As this was my first time using the camera, I messed up the exposure a bit using auto ISO too often, but it's easy to correct adjusting the brightness/contrast.

Cheers,

Matt

Matt, you running your GH5 in C-AF mode? I noticed the focus switching between your dive computer and reef - if it was C-AF it works well for you!

(Only running my in MF mode at the moment)
