#370052 Perfect destination with good underwater conditions

Posted by elbuzo on 03 February 2016 - 03:06 PM

I live and dive in DR for the last 25 years . We do have plenty of locations with clear water and white sand , water temp at this time is 26-27 celsius.

I can give you some guidance based on what you want to do exactly and your budget. Island is quite big so i suggest to plan ahead first and then choose to fly to the airport here that is closer to your chosen location . Airports options could be La Romana, Punta Cana , Santo Domingo , Puerto Plata and El Catey ( close to Samana ) , all international airports with daily flights from USA except El Catey which i'm not sure if only receive charter flights . All of them are close to white sand beaches with clear water.

Any additional info let me know

#352707 10.5 vs 10/17

God post Bob !

I had the same question in my mind since long time . I had both lenses and shooting the D7000 too .

After i bought the 10-17 i had never used again the 10.5 for the only reason of the advantages of having a zoom capabilities on my camera, which can help a lot to change compositions of
certains situations/subjects .

I think that the 10.5 is a little bit sharper and produce less chromatic aberration than the 10-17 but the advantage of being a zoom put the 10-17 as my top choice , specially for the kind of wide angle photos that i made most of the time : reefscapes, big animals and caves.

For static subjects , like wrecks i all probably prefer the 10.5 over the 10-17

Happy shooting

#346990 Amazing Orca Light

How easy did you find it to communicate with your buddy, given the difference between your primary light and the light they are carrying?

Sorry i realised i missed the meaning of your question !

With sounds. I bang my tank , different times different meanings . Some times if we are far from each other it doesn't work but it helps that my buddy is using a rebreather so he doesn't have exhaust bubbles' noise interfering . For example 1 bang -hold actual position for a shot , 2 bangs - i finish this shoot , 3 bangs- look at me . Also i use a dual dive alert on u/w mode the same way.

#346941 Amazing Orca Light

I just did a short cave dive ( faced some problems with my gear ) and managed to do some shots using only the light of an Orca Light prototype ( 20,000 lumens ) . I was blown away by the power and angle of coverage . I think that the potencial of that light for cave photography is amazing .

Attached some examples .

#327154 Sailfish and Manta outing

Posted by elbuzo on 04 March 2013 - 06:13 AM

Thanks for your report David

I was out there last wednesday also and was shocked of the great amount of mantas feeding on the surface  . I never though that was possible to see that many in the Caribbean , really an amazing spectacle . Our boat didn't have bridge so we don't have that perspective but they were everywhere. Also millions of sardines and lots of dolphins.

I regret not having spent more time with the mantas, since was our first day out and we spent the whole day looking for the sailfishes  without luck ( we only saw one pass by ). Thursday we have some moving baitballs and spend some time with the sailfish but water was not really clear ; after that a north front came and only today is the sea conditions starting to get better .

Here is a pic of 2 mantas feeding from that day
