From what I understand UHD premium requires 10 bit colour and additional dynamic range but not 422 which is just the way the colours are mapped on the frame. My understanding is that 422 is required mostly for grading but then once done you don’t see it.
My Tv LG OLEDB7V can display even 444 but the player can’t process the files
I use handbrake and with ffmpeg can also convert the camera files to prores free

Do you mean the computer player when streaming from your computer to your Tv or the Tv player when you insert a hard drive or a USB on the TV?

Tv player by the way even apple tv doesn’t play 422

But is it because of chroma sub sampling or because of the file format / codec. Will the same file play with a 420 sub sampling and not play at 422 if the codec is same at both files?

It’s because inside HEVC there are many profiles and the Tv supports up to main 10 but not 422 main 10 if it makes sense
