I'm sure the next RX (RX200?) will improve a lot.

Those RX100 users, are you finding it's hunting for focus a lot during shooting movie?

The rx100 does look for focus all the time to the point I have disables audio recording
However you can toggle manual focus and provided you are not moving all is good
In clear water the focus tracking works well during fin zoom

So when you toggle to manual focus and not moving, but the subject is moving and more fish swim into the scene, whether is in front or behind the subject, so is that change the focus machanism of the camera?

I played with the G15 at the store, the white balance in video mode is one push set by using the "custom" button. Just like the G1X, there is not other setting you can do for the video mode. You do however and lock the exposure, and change it with some work around, so it's more useful than the G1X.

I played with the G15 at the store, the white balance in video mode is one push set by using the "custom" button. Just like the G1X, there is not other setting you can do for the video mode. You do however and lock the exposure, and change it with some work around, so it's more useful than the G1X.

But G15 is 1080 24p, I hate motion judder of 24p.

The killer for the canon G series, has always been the terrible slow auto focus lag. With the g1x, it got even worse. I'll be surprised if the g15 suddenly turns the corner. I'd be happy as heck.

But with bad slow AF, slowing down further, as it gets dim or low contrast, the G15 will be aggravatingly bad to use, in the underwater world, where little subjects move, and you move, and everything moves. The canon G series just is not up to snuff.

The sony, panasonic, and now oly too, are all doing a great job with contrast detect AF.

Whilst the S series can mount wet lenses the G always had issues
There is no point buying a camera for video only for close ups
The lack of video mode instead is not an issue but the canon S series are battery hungry so not good for video

The G15 is using the Digic 5 system that Canon just put out recently, and claim to be 50% faster than the old stuff. I only have their Canon 7D so I can't comment on that. I only try the video shooting mode of G15 at the store as the sales guy was breathing down my neck (annoying!). The video focus seems quick. I'm waiting for full online review, and see if I can get my hand on it at a different store to test the image stabilization when shooting video. Of course I'm waiting for Ikelite to see if they will make a housing for it because the standard housing from Canon sucks with no 67mm thread!

The G15 is not just good for close up (the 1cm distance is nice!), but the fact that it maintain 2.8F at zoomed range make it more usable as well. My Hx30v is f3.5~f5.8, while the RX100 is 1.8~f4.9. So clearly the G15 make up for its smaller sensor size (compare to the RX100) by having a fast lens in telephoto.

If the G15 image stabilization is good for video, and I would pick it over the HX30V because of the fast lens, raw picture and larger sensor size. Between the G15 and the RX100, it's a mix of issue with menu navigation and quality.

The shape of the G9/10/11/12 lens has made it impossible to design a wet wide angle lens that
Could go with it
The only options were domes that only give you back the air field of view
Fix made an expensive housing for the G12 that could take a lens but this would not be removable in water
For video a wide angle is essential I would check carefully this is a possibility before making any investment

Thought I would do a quick update for those interested in an aluminum housing for the G15...

Recsea is making a housing for it due out the end of this month... got some pics sent to me and it looks very nice.
Nauticam is making a housing for it but too early for them to give me an ETA
Patima is making one for it ans was told it should be out Dec/January.

If anyone is able to contact aquapalooza, I would love to know if they will make one for it.

I have contacted Isotta but haven't heard back from them yet... if anyone has contact there, please see if you can find something out as they make a nice housing.

Ikelite's G15 housing is shipping. It's smaller, particularly in depth of the housing. They have not only the WD-4 lens, but have a shorter port that will take 67mm lenses.

Fantasea will have a housing out, similar to the ones it did for the Nikon P71/700 - I'm guessing March.

Didn't know Fantasea was making one for it but did know Ikelite had one. I've been more focused on research aluminum housings. I know that the housing Patim made for the G12 came with 2 ports... not sure if they will do that for the G15, I was told that it won't have an accessory shoe on top though.

Just got an email that Isotta will be bringing out a housing for the G15 in 3-4 weeks.

As I cannot create a new topic, I will use this one.
Looking for opinions to decide: Canon G15 + Patima housing X Sony RX-100 + Patima Housing.
With Patima housing, both cameras can use truly wide angle lens (W.A. is my passion)
In my opinion, Canon G15 + Patima has these pros:
-Hot shoe. Meaning you can use a sync cable and depend only on the external strobe recycling time to fire several shots
-Super fast lens, even using telephoto, with F/2.8
-More physical buttons. Meaning less hassle with menus
-Macro mode
-N.D. filter. very useful for taking sun ball shots
Cons:
-Historically Canon's slow auto focus
-TTL cannot be use in manual mode
-Smaller sensor

Sony RX-100 + Patima Pros:
-Bigger sensor
-TTL can be use in manual mode
-Much better video capabilities
-Fast auto focus
Cons:
-F/4.5 in telephoto
-Lack of hot shoe. You can only use optic cable, depending on the internal strobe which can take up to 10 seconds to recycle
-Lack of N.D. filter
-No macro mode

I would like to see your opinions

I love canon cameras and bought the G15 (but I'm more of a supermacro than WA person). I bought the canon oem housing but will most likley get either the Patima (is due out in a few weeks) or nauticam (they're supposed to make one but no real confirmation) since they both have round ports.

Have heard that the Patima housing's port with be 67mm threaded so that's a really nice plus... but not sure if it's just the port for WA or both ports.

The AF on the G15 is faster than the one of prior models. I had the G10 and never had an issue with the speed of AF on it.

Only negative, for me, is that you cannot synch ttl between strobe and camera in manual... but that means I need to get better at using my strobe in manual... and that's not all the difficulty anyway.

i have used both and do not miss the RX100...yes, IQ and FOV is better with the RX100 but the G15 still performs very well.
