Wondering what kind of computer you all are running for video editing? Specific specs would be useful. Looking to upgrade to something that can handle more complex tasks. Thanks in advance!

I just bought a mac mini 2018. 2 TB SSD hard drive 6 cores and I use final cut pro x and 32 GB memory with an LG ultrafine 5K screen which is great

I also have an external 2 TB SSD that I use to import GH5 files XAVC 400 mbps

It works fine however it does not manage to render real time 4K files from the GH5. This may be due to the fact it has an integrated GPU not discrete

However I have to say when I went to the apple store the only machine that could do real time render of 4K files was an iMac with a video card with 8 GB VRAM

So I ended up using proxy files it works and I can still switch to originals in case I make certain corrections that are intensive (I don't really lol)

this replaces my 2011 iMac that is still ok but nowhere near this set up

i think PCs will be cheaper

Blackmagic Design has a new Blackmagic eGPU Pro model featuring a Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics processor with 8GB of HBM2 memory coming. The Pro model is intended to be a workstation-class graphics performance enhancer for any Thunderbolt 3–enabled MacBook Pro and iMac as well as the new Mac Mini.

Yes however Blackmagic products at present give the most benefit with their own software
Final cut got an update under mojave but have not found any in depth tests to see how it improve matters

OK today I bought the blackamgic eGPU and it stutters it does not accelerate anything during export as this is mostly a CPU job

I checked again my 400 mbps timeline and if in final cut pro I run with original file performance optimised at 50% (1920x1080) it does not stutter during real time playback

In essence this GPU is a waste of time and am sending it back...

I'm using an Asus ROG for all video and photos editing, no issues at all with any editor I've tried so far

I'm using ASUS ROG too, with Core i7 and GTX 1060. Software I use all Adobe Creative Cloud, Premiere Pro, Lightroom, After Effect, etc.

So far ok for full HD editing, but slow for 4K.

I guess if you are on the Apple "ecosystem" with Final Cut you better go with mac family.
