#383022 A nasty Honduran surprise

Posted by Aquapaul on 10 April 2017 - 02:03 PM

Part of the problem in Roatan Honduras is 5 large airplanes land there and they are not equipped for that. Three of those 5 land with in 45 minutes, it just overwhelming. Just a few years ago there were only three a week. As for us, we will keep going back. We have been to CocoView 16 times and love the people there. But I do hope they get long lines figured out, seams to me if they could just space the planes out over a few more hours the problem would be fixed. The way they finger print you and stuff the camera in your face was mandated by USA customs, they furnished the equipment. Or so Im told..

What I have used to balance a plastic dome port is go to your local tire place and buy stick on wheel weights. They come in a strip with adhesive on one side.

For your time in Bali I highly recommend The Underwater Tribe. Dove with them a couple years ago and found them awesome.

#367904 Best photograph/er lists -What makes for a great image?

Posted by Aquapaul on 04 December 2015 - 05:14 AM

I like getting Facebook likes for the few images I post to Facebook but I realize that for the most part that doesn't say a lot about my photography, just means I have supportive friends, which is surely a pick me up.

But to really quantify a photographer and his/her images would be regardless of where they were captured would be from like minded photographers. Or to put it another way, critiques from your peers.

Being published does say something about ones work I suppose, but does it say that you had a product at the right price for what a buyer was willing to pay. I suppose that it might depend on the media your work was published in. Local newspaper or world wide magazine.

How about, I think I need a new camera and housing, this one just sucks. I really enjoy taking photos but my gear sucks so bad I just don't know what I'm going to do. Then after a week of so goes by, well it wouldn't be so bad if I could at least see what I was shooting. I suppose a view finder would help that quite a bit, I probably wouldn't need a new camera if I could see what I was shooting with this one.

There was probably nothing wrong with your 105. At close focus it will not open up to 2.8.

#339991 Bali with the Underwater Tribe

Posted by Aquapaul on 27 November 2013 - 04:06 AM

My Wife and I booked a trip to Wakatobi for last month and it turns out you have to have an over night in Bali, so why not stay a few more. This was our 2nd trip to Wakatobi, our last trip we spent a few days in Ubud taking in the sights and falling in love with the Balinese people. But I always wondered about the diving, there must be some good diving here some where. I knew from the Martin Edge books I have about the Liberty wreck so I thought that may be a place to start. Well last winter I saw a trip review on Wetpixel for the Underwater Tribe. From the trip report and Underwater Tribe's website we determined Underwater Tribe was the way to go.

We ended up staying in Amed and diving at Amed, Tulamben and Seraya. We had three days to dive three dives a day with some limited touring to and from. I have to say the way the Underwater Tribe handles everything makes everything worry free. First contact was with Miho at the airport. She then handed us off to our driver (Gede) and dive guide(Gede) who pretty much handled EVERYTHING from there on until dropping us off at the motel the night before our flight to Wakatobi. If you would like to dive here but are intimidated by whatever, these are the people for you.

One of the things that made this short holiday so worry free and I am not sure I realized it until I was home is how everything is handled. The price quoted for trip included everything. breakfast and lunch everyday, rooms every night, tips for sherpas, boat and driver, tanks weights. There were no hidden cost, none.

The diving. It was awesome and varied.

Day 1 we dove a sloping reef at Amed out of a small boat for a day. It was a good day, we hadn't been in the water in a few months and I had to remember what all the buttons do on my camera.

Day 2 we dove the Tulamben area. Two dives on the Liberty wreck and a wall dive all shore dives. Gede recommended I bring my macro but I insisted on wide angle, well I should have listened.

Day 3 we dove the Seraya area, Black sand gravel beach dives. Blue water muck dives all three. Some current but manageable. Kind of amazing all the creatures that live here. My camera skills need some improvement I am afraid and will have to come back here if they improve. Frog fish, Nudibranch, Gobies, Ghost pipe fish and list goes on and on.

Slide Show below, critics welcome.

Yes remove the UV filter. Also you might want to take a black sharpie and blacken out any white print on the front of the lens. Some people use black gaffer tape. It could also be light leaking from your cameras flash, there are topics about that here on Wetpixel, you could do a search.

#331803 Over 1900 Lost Pictures with Lightroom/Mac :(

Posted by Aquapaul on 23 May 2013 - 03:49 PM

I think you still have them somewhere and some how they became unlinked. If I were you I would go to Flicker and find the most popular Lightroom group and look through their most frequently asked questions and if that didn't get you an answer call the Adobe help desk. I am sure there is an answer at both of those places. When I was fairly new to lightroom I had the same thing happen. I was able to find my pic but lost edits on about 7000 photos. I wish I had asked one of these to places I mentioned before I messed things up even further.

Good Luck

#326767 Wanted: Recent Experience with Air Pacific Carry on Luggage

Posted by Aquapaul on 26 February 2013 - 05:03 AM

One year ago I called the LAX office with concerns of an overweight carry on, they allowed me to carry on one 30 pound bag for a fee to be paid at the counter. When I checked in the counter people knew about my bag but didn't charge me and let me through.

Note, watch the counter for a minute or two and figure out who the hard a$$ is and avoid that person. When we went it was obvious, a friend traveling with us got checked and they wanted to check his bag, he insisted on talking to the manager about all the camera equipment he didn't want to check and they let him through.

Don't let on that your bag is out of the ordinary, that was my friends mistake, he got a wheeled cart to go through an that was pretty much a dead give away. stupid stupid
