I had a stroke of luck a few months ago when I was contacted by an Ad Agency representing Canon to shoot an online commercial for a new (secret!) SLR, which turned out to be the 7D. They wanted a wildlife stories within Europe to be shot in the space of a few days. I tried to persuade them to do an underwater story, but the lack of a housing was a bit of a drawback, as well as the specialised nature of UW photography. In the end they liked my suggestion of the Camargue as a location, and we spend a fun few days wading in the mud, being bitten by mosquitoes, and chasing wayward horses. Having the choice of any Canon lenses I wanted to use was a dream come true- the 800mm f5.6 was lovely.

The 9 minute video of the story, along with pics etc is up here: http://www.canon.co.uk/takestories

I have posted a load more of the stills from the trip on my website http://www.ferguskennedy.com

Another cool aspect of the experience is that Canon are using my stills for their add campaign, so they're in lots of magazines at the moment, and apparently on billboards around London (mainly the pics of horses galloping through water). They are also apparently editing a 60 second ad for TV for Nat Geo channel (presumably Europe only).

Since that I campaign, I was also asked to do help produce a DVD in and around Cape Town to be supplied in the box with the 7D, 50D and 500D. This was also a great trip, and I managed to get in a bit of diving in CT after the shoot was over.

All in all a fantastic experience.

Congrats on the job and the great pics. Must be nice to see your own work all around in public.

Seeing your work convinced me to save up for "L" glass due to the weather sealing. I'm considering the 17-40 f4 zoom, since it has a rebate this month. Did you use any new glass not announced yet?

Thanks for giving us an insight to a wonderful opportunity.

Bo

Ooops. Forgot to ask. Have you tried fitting your 7D into your 5D Ike housing? Apparently it does not work in a S&S housing due to the height from the flash. But I'm curious about Ikelite. Thanks for any info on this.

Fantastic Ferg! Though I would not call it luck, they say you make your own luck and you obviously caught their attention and deservedly so.
Years since I read Horses on the Camargue, one of my favorite poems - made me go back and read it again, even makes me want to buy a Canon.

In the grey wastes of dread,
The haunt of shattered gulls where nothing moves
But in a shroud of silence like the dead,
I heard a sudden harmony of hooves,
And, turning, saw afar
A hundred snowy horses unconfined,

Hey,

Great poem loftus- I hadn't come across that before- just looked it up and read the whole thing. Makes me want to go back to the Camargue.

Thanks!

This is definitely the coolest Members In Media I have seen for a while. Fergus Kennedy, Ferg42, is featured in a beautiful new advert for the Canon 7D. Essential viewing!

I've merged the 2 threads together. I've been seeing Ken Watanabe ads in Asia and I found it a bit too glossed as he's an actor and not a shooter! At least Canon UK uses a photographer for the ads. Congrats Fergus.

Cheers Mike. All the footage in the TV ad was filmed on the 7D, and 80% of the longer web version. It was never the intention to shoot the video on the 7D, but the director and cameramen really liked the look of video files. The HD version looks really nice- shame it's not online.

Well seeing how the 5D2 and 7D cameras are now being used as B or C cameras on TV shows and even considered for pickups in several feature films (including a major one), I'd say it's not too hard to imagine not too many people disliking it.
