Tokina 10-17mm or Canon 10-22mm... or 11-16 f2.8?

11 February 2009 - 01:23 AM

Searching the forums didnot give a real answer on my question:

I was browsing the local camerashop and I noticed that the Tokina 10-17mm was on sale for 425 (549 normal), I was thinking to buy a WA or FE lens to get used to the wide angle before diving with it.. and this price makes it tempting. (10-22mm is listed at 615)

Does anyone have both lenses and can shoot an example pic with both the 10-17 and 10-22mm lenses of a room or garden for example?

I also read good reviews about the Tokina 11-16 f2.8... (545) since 95% of my dives are in murky waters overhere, would I benefit from the faster lens, or is the zoom range and longer minimal focus distance (0.3m) just too short? (limited to scenes, no closeup wideangle)

Wide-angle behind flatport

24 January 2009 - 06:33 AM

I test fitted a 17-50mm Tamron lens behind a flatport designed for 60mm yesterday. ok, there is no room for zooming but for the time being I have a 2nd lens that I can use for semi-wide-angle (17mm x1.6 crop = 27.2mm) unit I saved up for a dome.

What kind of distortion can I expect, or is it neglibe at this no-so-wide angle?

Reduce noise in Redfiltered RAW

21 January 2009 - 08:57 AM

Last week I went diving in Egypt with a redfilter attached to my G9, this was my first time shooting with redfilter but after some dives experimenting a bit with ISO/shutterspeed priority I got some good results. But I noticed that there was a lot of noise in the RAW images. So I stepped down from ISO 400 to ISO 200 or even 100 on sunny days. But the noise remained. :)

How can I reduce the grain and produce cleaner images? I tried to reduce noise in Lightroom 2 but that only produced a lot of fuzzyness overall, sharpning after that gave me even more noise.

This is an example pic, from the original RAW and not modified in LR (cropped to reduce tiff size)

link, warning 6mb!

Depth 15m
ISO 200

Does a Canon 50D fit in a 40D house?

Does a 40D fit a 50D housing, or the other way around?

The size and button location look 99% similar to me.
