#352649 D300 to 7d Mk II Good Idea?

J - You need 2 identical camera bodies anyway so you have a backup  :)  On a trip several years I had 2 D70 bodies fail in the same manner over a 10 day period.  Something about the shelf life of a micro processor that controls read/write to the CF card.

#349401 Diving in Alor/Komodo - How strong are the currents?

Posted by jcclink on 23 June 2014 - 05:24 PM

If you're diving Komodo take a reef hook & inflatable sausage.  And keep your dive guide in sight.  Conditions can change quickly at a few sites.  Currents are affected by the tide but in some areas there may still be some  current even at slack tide.  If you want to hang out with schools of fish you will be in a current.  No current - no fish in general.  Some dive operators/boats seem to have a fixed dive schedule & may not pay that much attention to the tidal currents.  On the bright side, if current is ripping at a site come back in 3 hrs - it will be a lot less.  Other than that Komodo offers great diving.  Most site are relative calm most of the time.  Cannibal Rock is a must for critters.  I've dove Komodo on 3 trips from a liveaboard.  Don't recall more than a couple of dives on the whole trip where current was really ripping.  (Fast drift dive - no photos.)  I have no problem going back again.

Diving Alor in Nov for the first time.  Haven't heard much about strong currents.

#336852 How do you (un)screw short Ikelite dome port?

Use a strap wrench with plastic handle & rubber strap to avoid damage to port.

#330992 Finally got a Nexus D7000! Anyone has a manual?

Posted by jcclink on 07 May 2013 - 06:22 AM

Guitar picks work great.  They come in several thicknesses, so buy a selection.  Like you say the main o-ring is a tight fit.  It takes a little practice removing & re-installing.  Place it flat into the groove with a little finger pressure.  If you work it parallel to the groove it will elongate slightly & won't fit properly (appears too long).

On a trip I only remove the o-ring if its really necessary to properly clean it.  Most of the time I can remove minor debris with it in place.  Try to keep the area between the o-ring & groove clean.  Something like the corner of a business card works for this.  You can flick out small particles with it.  I usually can do a long dive trip without removing the o-ring but do remove it afterwards for a good cleaning & complete re-greasing

I suggest buying a complete re-build kit for the housing.  It includes ALL the o-rings & new stainless c-clips that go on the button shafts.  Also 2 strap wrenches (plastic handle with about 20-25mm wide rubber strap).  Sometimes its really hard to unscrew the port.  Nexus is a great housing.  Not many of us use one.

How far can you lag behind your dive group before you're considered a solo diver? If you're a photographer you will be a solo diver at some point.

If you use a vacuum leak detector, rotate all the knobs/levers & push all the buttons several times. It's possible to have no leaks in static condition but housing could leak with a dynamic (move all controls) test. Ditto on hydrophone cable - it serves no useful purpose u/w, unless you like to sound of bubbles or shrimp.

#312265 How long do you leave your housing closed?

Posted by jcclink on 06 July 2012 - 06:36 AM

Over 35 yrs designing u/w electronic housings & using several u/w still & video systems, I've always left o-rings in place with housing closed. No issues. O-rings have been buna-n (the black ones). Keep clean & a little silicone grease when required. If I bought something with colored o-rings (like S&S strobes) I changed their blue o-rings to buna. Your main concern is eleiminating dust or debris, not compression of o-ring. The more you play with the seals the more likely a potential problem.
