#394639 GoPro Fusion or ThetaV - Anyone got one?

Posted by Pajjpen on 22 April 2018 - 05:17 AM

Alas on my next trip in 2 weeks (which was only booked last week, last minute) I've only got 30kg of luggage and 7kg of hand luggage - which is taken up by my scuba gear, rebreather etc. So the big camera will stay at home :(
Will take a Hero 6 and a couple of the lights thou. QatarAirways want 480$ for extra 15kg rtn!!! So thats a non starter...
At the moment, looking at both, I'm gonna pass...

Dude I had that problem too with some companies. Not many offer decently cheap extra luggage anymore, it's a joke. Klm is my recommendation if flying to Asia tho. They have a 100 eur one way fee for an extra bag of 23kg, and carry on is 12kg. That's what I'm gonna be using in the future when flying to that part of the world, and using it next week when flying to indo :)

Wishful thinking I fear.
On a recent visit to Puerto Galera we watched with horror as a photographer took his pics of a frogfish then smacked the fish off it's coral perch. Honest. He then moved along, found another and did the same thing. Incredible.

That is fucked up. If I saw that I don’t think I could have stopped myself from smacking the diver tbh.

Just take pics of things how it is, leave the marine life be. I really thought this was common sense, or at least hoped it was.

The form factor looks really weird. Also that large screen will not help so much underwater as it will sit low in any housing and particulary for macro you‘d still have to stick your head in the sand to use it. If at least it would be tiltable, housing mfg could consider a housing with the screen being tilted upwards 20 degrees or so, which would already help.

You took the words out of my mouth bubffm. Totally agree

Hey guys I finally did it after many years mulling over the options, I am a Proud new owner of a GH5 in the Nauticam housing.  OLY M.Zuiko Pro 7-14 and the 60mm macro!  Little bit of buyers remorse as it was a lot of money for me but very excited to get in the water and learn.  I've been shooting GoPro for years and have some pretty good content but looking to up my game so to speak.  You all can expect this NEWB to be asking a fair bit of questions on Wetpixel and don't be surprised if you get a PM from me in the near future as all you guys are amazing.  I am open to suggestions and critique about method and settings, workflow, and equipment options.  I currently am limited to sola 3500's with diffuser and no monitor yet.  My quote for a monitor package is 2900 USD for the 502 HD.  That might be a little rich for me at this stage. A better light package is for sure in the future.
If you had to make a choice on a better light package or monitor for video which would you go for first?

Maybe this needs to be moved to a different thread.
I actually unboxed my monitor yesterday (smallhd 501 in nauticam housing) and I don't regret the purchase one bit.
To answer your question tho I guess it depends what u want to shoot most, if macro is your priority I'd definitely pick up a monitor as your lights are sufficient for that.
If wide angle is your main priority I'd definitely get better lights before a monitor. Monitor isn't really a necessity at all, but a very nice addition to primarily macro as u don't have to bury your head in the sand[emoji16]

Wow I enjoyed that greatly. I think you have a real talent for macro. The exposure and lighting are spot on and some very interesting framing.
I loved how you can see the eyes inside the mantis shrimps eggs.

Thank you swink, I appreciate it!
I did enjoy macro a lot, doing more in May!

Awesome film, Pajjpen! Sharp focus and great stability. I am curious to know how much of this was captured using a tripod vs. freehand. I loved the supermacro shots of the seahorse at 2:04 and the wire coral shrimp at 3:34. I also really liked the nudibranch shots starting at 2:31 where they stand out against the dark background. I am sure that Dustin Adamson would be proud!
Your filming skills are much greater than mine so I do not have any advice to offer in that regard. However, as a viewer, I like to see some action shots interspersed with the still macro footage to liven up the pace. I also like a few establishing shots above and below the water to set the context. You have a lot of great footage so I imagine that you may have foregone this to keep your film under the 4-minute mark. In any case, great work!

Thanks! I appreciate it.
All my shots are with an xit404 tripod :) I too am a big fan of the dark backgrounds, and Dustin has been an inspiration to that for sure!
I get your point about action shots but during my stay there was no good opportunity to shoot wide angle as the conditions were bad (I did however do some fake camera movements to liven the shots up a bit)
As far as shots above the water I had planned to use my drone but it malfunctioned and didn’t work properly for the whole duration of the trip, hopefully fixed by may when I head to lembeh and Ambon.

You’re right tho, a lot of footage and trying to keep it at a maximum of 4 mins is hard sometimes, one of those good problems to have haha!

I think you’re way off Davide, and frankly come off as annoying.
If your noise tolerance is higher than everybody else’s well then good for you, really. But the rest of us are looking for as clean footage as possible, surely u can dive at any depth and illumate your subject with lights but that’s not the issue.. the issue is with shooting deep ambient light video where lights just won’t be able to reach (i.e most hammerhead and the likes kind of dives)
Didn’t know an “avarage joe” wasn’t allowed to care about the quality of his footage from his 15-20k$ Setup.

Lastly, talking about topside lighting here is totally irrelevant.
Just my 2 cents..

#391007 GH5S Rumours...

Posted by Pajjpen on 08 January 2018 - 01:39 PM

Honestly I gotta say I'm impressed. I could live with the 8 bit if only they didnt remove the ibis.
Someone with a lot of money to spend could get a 5s with their gh5 and use the 5s for the deeper/ night dives and the gh5 for everything else seeing as they both fit in the same housing.
Us mere mortals will probably stick with the gh5 tho.
