Wow I enjoyed that greatly. I think you have a real talent for macro. The exposure and lighting are spot on and some very interesting framing.
I loved how you can see the eyes inside the mantis shrimps eggs.

Cheers
Steve

Thank you swink, I appreciate it!
I did enjoy macro a lot, doing more in May!

Awesome film, Pajjpen! Sharp focus and great stability. I am curious to know how much of this was captured using a tripod vs. freehand. I loved the supermacro shots of the seahorse at 2:04 and the wire coral shrimp at 3:34. I also really liked the nudibranch shots starting at 2:31 where they stand out against the dark background. I am sure that Dustin Adamson would be proud!

Your filming skills are much greater than mine so I do not have any advice to offer in that regard. However, as a viewer, I like to see some action shots interspersed with the still macro footage to liven up the pace. I also like a few establishing shots above and below the water to set the context. You have a lot of great footage so I imagine that you may have foregone this to keep your film under the 4-minute mark. In any case, great work!

Thanks! I appreciate it.
All my shots are with an xit404 tripod :) I too am a big fan of the dark backgrounds, and Dustin has been an inspiration to that for sure!
I get your point about action shots but during my stay there was no good opportunity to shoot wide angle as the conditions were bad (I did however do some fake camera movements to liven the shots up a bit)
As far as shots above the water I had planned to use my drone but it malfunctioned and didn’t work properly for the whole duration of the trip, hopefully fixed by may when I head to lembeh and Ambon.

You’re right tho, a lot of footage and trying to keep it at a maximum of 4 mins is hard sometimes, one of those good problems to have haha!

#391096 IS IT WORTH IT? GH5s - No Stabilization

Posted by Pajjpen on 10 January 2018 - 07:57 AM

I think you’re way off Davide, and frankly come off as annoying.
If your noise tolerance is higher than everybody else’s well then good for you, really. But the rest of us are looking for as clean footage as possible, surely u can dive at any depth and illumate your subject with lights but that’s not the issue.. the issue is with shooting deep ambient light video where lights just won’t be able to reach (i.e most hammerhead and the likes kind of dives)
Didn’t know an “avarage joe” wasn’t allowed to care about the quality of his footage from his 15-20k$ Setup.

Lastly, talking about topside lighting here is totally irrelevant.
Just my 2 cents..

#391007 GH5S Rumours...

Posted by Pajjpen on 08 January 2018 - 01:39 PM

Honestly I gotta say I'm impressed. I could live with the 8 bit if only they didnt remove the ibis.
Someone with a lot of money to spend could get a 5s with their gh5 and use the 5s for the deeper/ night dives and the gh5 for everything else seeing as they both fit in the same housing.
Us mere mortals will probably stick with the gh5 tho.

#390936 Wanted: Sony PXW-Z100 in Gates Housing

Posted by Pajjpen on 07 January 2018 - 04:00 AM

Honestly I'd never use a Sony for video, ever.. Simply because Sony colors are horrible compared to most other brands.
I'm using the gh4 with the panasonic 7-14mm, Olympus 60mm, panasonic 12-35 and the panasonic 14-42 PZ.

Crazy how the monitor is just 600$ but the housing for it is over 4K, would have loved one for my gh4 but so not worth the price imo.

#385163 Small Camera with quality

Posted by Pajjpen on 19 June 2017 - 11:20 AM

I know, im in the water on a regular basis running trips. I just dont want to spend 12K and still not be happy. The only camera that comes close to the !dx mkii is the Panasonic GH5 at a fraction of the cost. I priced the 1DX package and its around 25K  I can get the GH5 package around 10k

25k is ridiculous haha. Go for the gh5!

#384244 Sony a7s II underwater use -- All parameters

Posted by Pajjpen on 20 May 2017 - 10:30 AM

Last work at Red Sea...

Lovely colors, really. This was shot with a Sony? Looks like canon colors to me, very jelous!

Dustin:

Wow this is incredibly helpful and I very much appreciate it.  I bought my a7s II because a filmmaker friend had switched over from Nikon to it and he was very enthusiastic.  He was touting the inboard 4K and low light capability.  I loved the mirrorless concept, and some of the lenses are fantastic.  So I made the investment to purchase it, and the housing, and that was a considerable investment for me. I I really did not know enough at the time to appreciate that using a superb camera UNDER THE OCEAN is a very specialized form of cinematography.  I never checked out the white balance issues and did not even think of it because I am a rookie, but who is still trying to learn as fast as possible.

Accordingly, I am going to do some tests on the next dive trip, which is in the Sea of Cortez in 3 weeks.  I am also going to document the tests.  Iwill do my best to do everything to manually white balance correctly, and will document it.   I will also experiment with different picture profiles.  It is possible that some of the issues can be corrected in grading or color correction.  Thus, I will be testing the sLog2 and sLog3 picture profiles as these allow better color correction later.

Then i will make a little film of the tests, including the location and experience.  Put it on the Internet.  See what more I can learn.

I also bought the camera for filming above water.  I want to make films, that tell stories, and to feature certain ideas, as well as film underwater.  Most of the work of this camera, hopefully, will be of interviews of people.

So thanks so much for this helpful information.  I will do the tests and then let you know how they come out.

George Paul
