Will the reef & turtles survive? A long but fascinating read about the fight between the inhabitants of Guana Cay, a tiny island in the Bahamas, against an american developer who wants to bulldoze 1/3 of the island for a hotel, marina, golf course, and housing development. Other players in the story include Disney, the Bahamian government, Caribbean Conservation Corps, Earthwatch, and scientists who view the whole project as one big experiment regardless of the possible cost to the islanders and the environment.
From the EIA for the project" "The project will be an experiment in sustainability for small island developments. Clearly, local residents or Bahamians in general would not appreciate being the site of 'experimental' approaches to development of their natural resources, but the aim of the experiment is to provide a truthful documentation of the real ecological costs."
