I have recently experienced a problem where my PC would not recognise the microdrive fitted to my S2 over the firewire connector
I finally found a solution.
Connect the camera and turn it on. Then reboot your PC and as a part of boot up it will run a diskcheck of the microdrive and fix any problems with it.
Voilla! computer now recognises the microdrive again.
