Who thinks there should be some great, dedicated u/w digis? Say a digital Nikonos, with f100 AutoFocus speed, LCD viewing...
Are there any dedicated u/w digis yet?

I say someone should come out with a digital back (with no focal length multiplier) for the Nikonos camera.

We had a post here earlier about the Sea & Sea DX-200. It looks like a low end camera; only 2 Mpixels. I would be seriously interested if somebody came out with a high end camera.
If they did it right. There would be no need to ever open up the camera. Just a battery compartment and an USB port. A lot less likely to be killed by flooding.
I want a digital Nikonos RS with the CCD image sensor that's going into the Nikon D100, 1GB of memory, a jack for an external battery pack and a firewire port.
That's not asking much. Is it?

I think for now two factors will keep this from happening: the low volume of sales it would probably generate (Nikon couldn't even justify the Nikonos anymore) and the fact that digital is still in its early childhood (it is definitely out of its infancy). Having said this, I shot both my film camera "dinosaur" and my Olympus C-4040Z in the pool last night and am now seriously considering leaving the mocster Ikelite housing for my Canon EOS A2 behind and just taking the small digicam housing to the Galapagos with me. Must be getting out of shape or something 'cause that big housing was sure a load to carry around! I, for one, can't understand the motivation behind the Sea and Sea product mentioned. You can do better with the housed P&S digicams, can't you?

It dosen't have to be made by Nikon. I was thinking of a third party back. You could make it big enough to hold the guts of just about any digital camera and you would have access to the Nik 15 mm lens. With use of an LCD you could in effect have TTL viewing for your macro without using framers. Just dreaming.
