Don't forget to come to the NCUPS June meeting this Friday, June 8, 2007!

Millbrae, CA 94030, located only ten minutes south of the San Francisco
International Airport. Cost is FREE.

The door will open at 7:00 p.m. for setup and socializing.
There will be no pre-meeting seminar at this meeting.
The meeting will begin promptly at 8:00 p.m.

CALIFORNIA BEACH DIVE PHOTO COMPETITION WINNERS!
It should be a really exciting evening with a wrap-up of the California Beach Dive Photo Competition, including a showing of the winners and the Day in the Life Of show.

FEATURED PRESENTER:
Then on to the featured presenter George Steinbach, executive director of the California Artificial Reef Enhancement Program (CARE) http://www.calreefs.org. His presentation will center on the debate on whether the oil and gas platforms along California's coast should be removed after decommission. The original mandate to the oil companies was to remove them, but since they were installed they have become home to an abundance of thriving marine life. Scientists believe that the structures are important to the regional fish production and divers consider them to be among the best dive sites in California. But, residents of the coastal towns along the California shoreline where you can see the platforms consider them an eyesore and want them removed as originally mandated. I hope you can join us to learn about the environmental and economic impact these oil rigs have.

MINICOMP(S): The minicomp subject is Tiny Fish. Digital entries only! There is a separate skill level for Novice entries (if there are enough entries). You must be an NCUPS member to participate.

I guess you have quite a few rigs off the Texas coast that at some point will be the subject of a similar debate.

It will be interesting to see how this all works out. I've never dove an oil rig but I know divers that have and have seen photos. Some of them are beautifully covered with marine life.

Kathy,

I've been involved in the TX and LA rigs to reefs work and have myself created a few reefs :-)

When in was at Berkeley - my masters research was focused on technical methods to make reefs out of the big California platforms. At that time I was very involved - but have since moved away.

Cheers
