I was wondering the same James. I was thining more a magnifying type glass thickness. I may see what that looks like and rig something less permanent.
I am open to any engineering suggestions to consider.

The one Phil Williams sent me to test was approximately the same size and worked very well on the camera itself. But as I noted the DOF was not deep enough to be used on the outside of the housing. I am about to start collecting loupes and cutting them down to try to find a solution. Also one of the cheap slide viewers might be adapted.
Seeing the images in the LCD over the last two seeks in Grand Cayman was one of my biggest problems so I'd really like to find a solution.

Don't know how or why, but I can say that it does work nicely...........plus the black sides make it easier to see............have to be very careful to not let it get hit.........don't know exactly how strong it is...........the minor scuffs polish off easily by my local jeweler
