Once again underwater photographs did well in many categories, showing how our images can compete and are accepted on a level footing with more typical wildlife images. The competition this year attracted over 32,000 entries and unsurprisingly the standard of the award winning photos is incredibly high across the board.
The award winning underwater photographs were:
Felipe Barrio winner of The Underwater World Category
Paul Nicklen runner up, specially commended and highly commended in The Underwater World Category
Thomas Peschak winner of Nature In Black and White Category
Graham Eaton runner up in the Animal Portraits Category
Jurgen Freund specially commended in the Animal Portraits Category
Angel Fitor highly commended in the Animal Portraits Category
Douglas David Seifert highly commended in The Underwater World Category
Len Deeley highly commended in The Underwater World Category
Patrick Weir highly commended in The Underwater World Category
Bela Nasfay highly commended in Animal Behaviour
Jeff Yonover highly commended in Endangered Wildlife Category
Wade Hughes highly commended in Endangered Wildlife Category
And me, Alex Mustard, highly commended in Nature in Black and White Category
Alex
p.s. sorry if I missed anyone. There were several photographers who shoot underwater, who won with their topside images.

Looking at all of this it reconfirms what we all know, great photographs are about the eye of the photographer, composition, lighting etc, much more than the equipment.

I really like the composition, and your choice to convert the color image to monochrome makes it stand out against the usual "explosion of color" UW images.
The winning and commended images Shell Wildlife Photographer Of The Year 2007 were announced today:

And here is a photo of the Awards Dinner in the main hall of the Natural History Museum:
Also there are pod-casts of interviews with some of the photographers (although this page causes issues on my computer). I am doing one again this year, tomorrow at 12:30 (I promise not to mention my new book!).
