Hello everyone,

I'm a nature and wildlife photographer aspiring to make a professional career out of photographing nature subjects. I would love to photograph underwater subjects, but don't really have $1000+ to invest in a dedicated underwater housing. I currently use a 1D Mark II N and would likely have to purchase another DSLR specifically for underwater use since few housings appear to be made for the 1D Mark II N. I had previously purchased the Ewa-Marine UAXP100 underwater bag for shooting with, but the bag is such a tight fit on my 1D2N that it is very difficult and time consuming to get the camera into the bag and nearly impossible to use any of the controls once in there. My question is, are there any other affordable underwater solutions that actually work?

One day, I wouldn't mind investing a couple thousand dollars in a 5D and Ikelite housing and ports to use it with. But right now, its a big investment for something I will hardly ever use. I would like to have some way of photographing crayfish, lilypads, and other underwater subjects just for the fun of it, and would hate to pass up a photography trip of snorkeling with manatees or in shallow reefs because I have no way to photograph any of it. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Kari

Hi Kari,

You may want to look for a used surf housing. They are not deep depth rated, but they can be taken shallow. They are pretty affordable - and I remember seeing some for sale here or on Ebay.
