Hi,

CMAS is helding 12th Sea Underwater Photography World Championship
in Jeju Island, Korea from 31 May through 5 June. Is anybody coming there ?

I know that Espen Rekdal and Vidar Skålevik from Norway will participate. Otherwise, it italians Andrea Carlesi/Francesco Sesso have been enlisted.

Shchae: How is the diving there? I talked to Arturo last weekend and he had no idea and did not find anything on internet.

His Google must not work... I got about 643.000 hits on 'scuba diving korea'

As far as I've heard (and I'm not going, I'm sorry to say) it's rather on the cold side, maybe even drysuit diving. I see people recommending 5 mm suits for september/october, which is supposed to be the warmest time of the year around Jeju with water temps of about 25 celcius.

The diving should be a mix of kelp and tropicals, as far as I've heard. And lots of big, fat nudibranchs But there's got to be somone from Korea around here to tell us all about it?

I was not checking this post for sometime as I did not see any post for few days since I started it
but, now I understand few members are coming & has interest.

O.K. I will be the team leader for Korean team (myself + 2 photographers + 2 models)
& am not shooting but, supporting the team and I will be happy to assist any members coming to
Korea.

Above comment is basically true. I recommand 5mm wet suit or semi-dry or even drysuit. Water Temp will 23-25 degree C.
You will see a lot of soft coral and fish. I am going to have some spare equipments + accessories at site and let me know

Congratulations to Espen, I have had the pleasure to meet him, amazing fellow, in the World Championships in Egypt 2000 and Marseille 2002, he's been getting closer and closer to this deserved title!

Congrats also to my good friend Luis Fernando Cassino and Marcio Lisa for getting the best results for Brazil in many long years, keep up the good work!

It was a very close call this year as I had 4 gold winners with bronze medals breathing down my neck. Having felt that I have been a little unlucky in previous competitions with regard to the title, I felt I was payed back in full (and then some) in this years competition. There were some very good photographs left out of the top ten, and some that I believe did not belong there made it. But as I have been told before, a jury is a jury, at least this time the jury didn't know the nationality and names of the photographers when they were voting. In this respect I feel that the competition is evolving in the right direction. (I have been told many incredible stories about what went on in Mauritius in 2007).

To this years competition there were quite a few wetpixlers present. Here is a photo of some of them.

Congratulations to Espen and to the best photographers after the jury has finished the job:

1. Denis Palbiani ( 222,8 Points)
2. Carlos Minguell ( 221,1 Points)
3. Eol soo Kim ( 176,5 Points)

After the jury´s decision the president decided to transfer this points into an nobody_nows_what this_bullshit_means point system.
That means that a photo on place 1 ist 511 times better than a photo on place 10, but the real different was only 2 points or so.
After this displacement Denis went down to 6...

Now i have an idea what Alex means some posts earlier...

The rules for the "contest" were online available for more than 9 month.
Those responsible changed the rules the night before the contest starts.
An absolutely "No Go" was to give the permission for a second camera in the contest this evening
That was absolutely unfair for those guys who leaved there second camera at home, because they have red the rules previously.


In my opinion it was not like a world championship, it was an amateur contest, a big joke.
But the dinner was ok ;-)

That has nothing to do with the friendly Korean´s or with any participant.
The officials did a lot of mistakes. (To break with the own rules, no oxygen or spare air in the beginning, unable to explain the categories, no breefing at all etc.)

Once again, congratulation to Espen.
