NCUPS 28th Annual California Beach Dive Photo Competition May 16-17, 2009

On this weekend, scuba divers from all over California will converge on Monterey, California and compete for top prizes in one of the most unique underwater photo contests in the United States. This is a one-day competition open to underwater photographers and videographers of all experience levels, where all digital photos and video must be taken from beach dives along the Monterey coastline on Saturday, May 16, 2009 (Point Lobos and boat dives are not allowed). A panel of judges, comprised of regional professional underwater photographers, will select the winners on Sunday, May 17. The winners will be announced and prizes awarded on Sunday, May 17 in the afternoon following two seminars including in the competition registration fee.
The competition starts with registration on the morning of Saturday, May 16 and contestants spend the day scuba diving and shooting images. Images are then turned in at the Backscatter Underwater Video and Photo Shop on Cannery Row that afternoon. On Saturday evening, divers and their guests will gather in Carmel for cocktails, dinner catered by Emergency BBQ, and a special underwater photography show by Andy Sallmon.
On Sunday, May 17 Underwater Photography Seminars will be held at the Monterey Institute of International Studies while participants await their competition results. Both seminars will be approximately two hours in length and will be held in the Irving Auditorium. The first seminar will begin at 9am and the second seminar will begin at 1pm. The Award Show and Ceremony will also be held in the Irving Auditorium from 3pm to 5pm.
Top prizes consist of scuba and photographic equipment and dive trips to exotic tropical destinations. Travel prizes provided by Reef & Rainforest Dive & Travel Adventures consist of a 1 week cruise aboard a Worldwide Dive & yacht in Thailand or Komodo, 7 nights at Lembeh Resort in Indonesia, 1 week at Kasawari Lembeh Resort in Indonesia and a $500 travel voucher for the Nautilus Explorer. Other trips include a 5-night Maldives trip aboard the Manthiri, 1-week trip for two adults to the Exotic Caye Beach Resort in Belize, a 7 night Tawali Adventure in Papua New Guinea, 5 nights for 2 people at Coral Caverns Dive Resort in the Bahamas, 1-week trip to Cocotinos Resort in Indonesia and a 1-week trip to Kosrae Village in Micronesia. Other prizes have been donated by Backscatter Underwater Video and Photo, Aquatica, StormCase, SanDisk, Cypress Charters and many others.
The $75 entry fee (if postmarked on or before May 1, 2009, $90 thereafter), includes a T-shirt, Saturday evening dinner with a featured presentation, admission to Sunday’s seminars and an opportunity to participate in the door prize drawing of unselected prizes at the awards show on Sunday. Non-participants may also enjoy the dinner and show for $20.

6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Cocktail hour at the Carmel Woman's Club.
