So I finished my thesis (fingers crossed I pass
I had this concept in my minds eye for quite some time. I contemplated using white face paint and various other means to achieve the affect but decieded that a mask would work best.
The mask was purchased off ebay for $8 :-)
I got the model (Mike Larson) to wear a black suit without a tie. The water was freezing so Mike opted to wear a full wetsuit under his outfit. I then used safety pins and whole lot of black and white silk to create the overall costume.
Lighting was pretty simply - 2 x ds 51 strobes either facing forward at f16 1/200th. or the camera titled vertically with 1 strobe above water pointing down and the other set to -3 and pointing up from below to act as fill light - this technique gets the ripple effect I love.
Post editing was done in Photoshop cs 2 and lightroom - basically just curves, white balance (not kept constant between photos) and burning to produce black eye sockets.

no 5 - Munch's Scream - I've been wanting to do something like this for ages. I knew it would most likely have to be a reflection to get the "scream" part correct and the mask provided the perfect subject. This scream was painstakingly created at 4am using the warp tool :-)

A big thanks to Mike for putting up with the cold water and helping me out!
Hope you enjoyed them,
Cheers,
