No dive trips on the near horizon, though there are some pool sessions coming up I was going to try to shoot, and maybe will try to go to Dutch Springs.
Drew Drew Drew....
BE LIKE MIKE!
don't do it.
Did you pay royalties to Nike for that?

Actually, Drew, I am just so envious!
You are not helping my self-control one bit...

Turnabout is fair play
Funny, I called one of the board sponsors who shall remain nameless. Very helpful as always. But they just had to gush about the video capability. Geezz after four years I just barely got my set up to something I like. Then they mention this feature. A fine way to put my credit card into to deco.
Yeah I hear you...
Drew your soon be selling 'AGAIN' to buy Scarlet... But then no one will be buying because they will want SCARLET as well...
Once again people... equipment will be upgraded every 6 months there will be a 5D MkIII soon with better video quality... For the money your paying look at Scarlet... Unless your loaded then buy everything...

Anyway, on Scarlet. Early in 2008 had made plans to go somewhere late 2008/Early 2009 and kept my eye out waiting for Scarlet. And it eventually will come out. And then Gates hopefully will make a housing for it. As you say equipment always changes and gets upgraded. In the land of electronics can always do the "what if" or "wait and sea." (And there is a good chance the Scarlet may come out this fall.) And within in the next few months there are other cameras from Canon, Nikon, Sony etc. that will probably be released that will be better, though I would not think the 5d Mark II will change that quickly.
As to cost, nope not loaded. But I do have gear that I will be trading in/eBaying. Sort of consolidating things. Ultimately not too painful, and I still have my video rig and a small back-up photo rig for the time being.
Will Scarlet do still photos as well as a dedicated still camera? Very well could be. But when I travel, usually carry one video rig and one still rig (and sometimes a small back-up still rig) that I switch off with my wife. We both like shooting both. The Canon 5D Mark II gives me an option, and for short/local trips, or places I have been alot, could even leave some gear at home, just go with the Canon knowing if I felt like shooting some video, I could.
And there is a good chance I will get the Scarlet when it comes out ... maybe. Depends on how the pricing and actual specs shake out (size/weight) finally settles out. At one point it was listed at RED at under $2,000 then now $3,000.
But I will have some EF lenses that hopefully will work

I understand Van Gogh cut off his ear because Gaugin had better brushes...
I thought it was because he was in love and a bit off beat, as it were
Not a case of me doing this though because of the better brushes syndrome, as summarized above to Dean. There were many factors that went into it. (Or so I think). I know I will never get the 1D etc., way out of my price range and really cannot justify the cost/benefits. But in addition to the video, the weatherproofing (there was a discussion here on WP about just how sealed it really was and it shook out to be higher than conditions I would dare to try by a wide margin) and the quality for use also above the water were things I liked. The performance at higher ISO with less noise also. I took some shots in the camera store, which has that subdued camera store type lighting, and liked what I saw.
Often I will throw my G9 in my pocket when I do not feel like carrying things so I can get some video or photos with the expectations of getting a certain quality of both. When I am looking for more, I will throw both my video and still rigs into a bag to carry about. Now I can take the Canon, and get very good video, more so above water - in other words, there were enough times that I can recall where having the 5D Mark II would have been a real nice option to have.
Do I have any expectations that my above or underwater photography is going to be better? Nope, not at all. As I always say, put a $200 Point and Shoot in Eric's, Alex's or many other peoples hands around here, such as a G9 or G10 in Ed's hands, and put (in this case) the Canon 5D Mark II in my hands, and I guarantee that they blow away anything I can do. But that does not bother me (too much

).
Bottom line is I held off on dSLR forever, and when I finally broke down and got a dSLR, my enjoyment of taking photos went up again back to the days when I shot slides and film. The features and changes that this camera brings to the table for me will add to that (so I hope.) If it really was just thinking like Van Gogh, yeah it would have been a bad call to get this camera. (Or any camera) I know Ked's don't make me run faster or that eating my Wheaties will get me to bench press my car

Interesting one John, I heard something similar about Dean B and Ron Jeremy...

I will save Dean some time - Ron Jeremy was always jealous of Dean
