I have narrowed it down to an Ikelite DS50 or DS125 because of their automatic usage ability. Plus I have an Ikelite housing so the mounting is easy. If I want to mostly do 3ft or less with some macro work is the DS50 enough or should I spring for the more powerful 125?
How much flash do I need?

Spring for the DS-125. The aiming light and variable output make it worth the money, IMHO.

I'd agree. I have the DS-50, and although it's a great strobe, I wish I had gotten the DS-125. I added a Mini-C lite for modeling, but the resulting rig was sort of cumbersome. I also wish that I had the manual control over the output, since I mostly shot on manual control with the camera (Sony DSC-S85).
