For everyone here using a DSLR, either the 5 or 7D, what do you do about topside audio capture. I haven't used these cams but there is no XLR inputs on them is there? You doing separate audio captures on a different device?

Done it a few ways Steve. There are some lavs and various shotguns mics that work okay with the mini jacks. Bring along a laptop to record is also an option I have used. Eric mentioned Pural Eyes for synching and the example they have On This Link (check the tutorial for Final Cut/ Plural Eyes 1.2) is a good one. Record a band live and get the sound off the sound board.

I was asking about component Drew as my Canon A1 only has component out no HDSDI (Shoulda got the G1) or HDMI.

Hey Drew have you heard the rumor about Canon releasing a device that actually fits into the CF card slot which capture footage at higher bit rates and not through H264... sounds like a very shot to me but worth an ask.

The best way to find out is to test the output on a broadcast monitor and scope both the tape output and feed.

About the CF card, no I have not. I try not to do rumors, otherwise I'd have to talk about the rumors about Eric Cheng.

There are also stand alone audio capture devices like the Zoom H4N and Tascam DR-100. On a recent shoot using a 7D with the DR-100 and a wireless Sennheiser mic system it out performed an EX1R also using the Sennheiser mics on both image quality and audio capture (for talking head interviews not action shots). The EX1R (35mbps NOT to Nano) actually had some awful moire that the 7D didn't even show at all, but that's another story!

there is the new ninja 2 with recording clean HDMI out into ProRes HQ. And the monitor is with higher resolution (800x480) and smart control (focus peaking, zebra....).

Saw this at Photokina last weekend and talked with a Nikon tech specialist about it. Fantastic results in combination with D800 and D4.
Should be pretty interesting for UW (external recording and control monitor in same one device). Any housing available for this? opinions of this for usage in UW?

Yep...good ol' Aussie top quality/value for money gear (just like the BMC...and some other stuff I can think of ).

Better still the Ninja 2 is selling for the same price as the Ninja did...and the latter's price is down to a silly $650.

Works beautifully with my D800...still not quite as good as what I'm getting out of my hacked GH2's (GH3 should be even better)...but way better than the mediocre, artifacted lo-res video I got out of my Canon D7 and Canon 5D2.

Using the Atomos Ninja 2 does improve the already very decent internal aquisition, although I havn't had the time to do a careful comparative test yet. I'm only using it topside since it's no real advantage over my GH2 underwater.

Especially after Atomos has dropped the pricing of the Ninja 2 to $700-800.

 

I remember there was here at wetpixel a short report about a prototype of this, but cannot find it anymore....
