Premeeting Seminar (7:05PM-8PM): ReefID Project Overview by John Fifer
FEATURED PRESENTER (8PM – 9:15PM: Rusty Sanoian
Topic: Rebreathers and their benefits for use in photography and video
Biography:
Rusty Sanoian was certified to dive in 1984 at San Carlos Beach in Monterey, California. Now he works at Backscatter and sits at a desk that looks out on the beach where he was certified as a teen. He spent 15 years jumping out of helicopters into forest fires, working on hand crews and back country law enforcement for the US Forest Service.
One day he was in Monterey and saw some technical dive gear and a spark was ignited. He signed up for an advanced Nitrox class and started his progression which would eventually lead to Mixed Gas Closed Circuit Rebreathers and eventually underwater photo & video.
Rusty’s passion is filming on deep wrecks and inside caves, but his favorite place to shoot is still at home in Monterey. Some of his recent projects include filming the Andrea Doria and a section of the ship never before visited for the 50th anniversary PBS special “Secrets of the Dead, Sinking of the Andrea Doria” and “Freshwater Seas, Wrecks of the Great Lakes” for Detroit Television. Rusty has also worked with the BBC and CBS on films shot on location in Monterey Bay.
Rusty will educate us on rebreathers and show us some videos showing how close they allow you to get to your subjects and get shots that are not possible on scuba.
