I'm thinking of designing a housing.

There's plenty of sources for latches.
Plenty of plastic fabricators.
and worst case, you can have a machine shop make those damn push buttons, that Ikelite refuses to sell.

But where on Earth do you get custom sized o-rings, to seal this custom sized housing?

There are plenty of online o-ring distributors around.
You want Buna-N with a Durometer hardness of no more than 70. The higher the number, the harder the o-ring. Nikonos o-rings are super soft at D-50, but most other o-rings are closer to D-70.
O-ring size will be also determined by the application the o-ring. Different applications require different amounts of compression in the static state.

Happy hunting and building,

Hi,

You can also get Oring splice kits, which will let you make orings of any size.

We use the quiet often on the commercial marine electronics side.

If you are thinking of designing the housing, you should look into how to design the groove width and depth that the o-ring will sit in around a normal dimensioned o-ring. There is a lot of o-ring information from online dealers, and many standard diameters and dimensions to choose from, but if you do not make the groove the right size the o-ring will never seal correctly and could easily leak.

parkeroring.com should give you everything you need, design housing around o-ring design and sizes.

I live about a 10 minute drive from what must be the O-ring headquarters of all Southeast Asia (Ive bought rings from them before- theyre dirt cheap!!). If any of the other sources don't pan out- send me a PM with the dimensions. Theres a good chance I will be able to get them and send them to you!

Cheers to the DIY spirit!

Yeah, I figure I'll base some of the dimensions off off the housing for the real camera.

There are plenty of standard size o-rings available, so why not design for one of them? Actual custom (as in made to order) is be a major pain & costly.

PARKERORING.COM
should give you everything you need, including o-ring install information,

download their [PDF] Parker O-Ring Handbook which is sort of a bible on o-ring information

In cutting the O ring groove, pay close attention to the groove surface finish!
It should be very smooth with no scratches at 90* to the direction of the groove.

Use standard o-ring dimensions as a starting point, rather than the housing dimensions. O-rings are made in 5mm steps, so this usually means only a small change in housing dimensions. and spare you a lot of trouble later...
