Did you consider you were breathing compressed air in the shallow waters where you get the greatest depth change?
I don't think the lack of a helmet was the greatest risk.

Haha! Madd ass.
Me and the gf did a shore dive from here a year or so ago and the only exit through the reef was preety narrow. Coming back, the waves had picked up and we were doing a similar thing, involuntarily! We only had a six foot break in the reef to head for though.
