With 3D productions in steep decline the next big thing is going to be Ultra HD, so 4k in a couple of years is going to be massive. It's like rewinding 10 years to the birth of HDV. However just because a consumer palm camera shoots HD doesn't mean that it is a Sony F3. Same with 4k - there will be lots of different cameras all with varying quality. Very interesting times indeed!

Not really as they are very different cameras. It's a bit like comparing HDV to DigiBeta. They both have the same resolution, but you wouldn't for a second say that the images were the same quality. I'm not saying that this isn't a great camera to buy as we have no idea until people start to get their hands on it, but apart from it being the same resolution it is not direct competition to RED in any way, shape or form.

Or is it??

I'm wondering where the white balance execute button is (touch screen???), what the quality of the HDMI output signal is (ref capturing to an external recorder), and how the bitrates of 30p and 60p @ 4k compare.

Would sure be nice to get a 4k camera with a proper international support network.

I just had a thought which can be a dangerous thing. It's actually a lot closer to what Scarlet was supposed to be than Scarlet ended up being (apart from RAW that is) and due to the sensor size in many ways it will probably end up being a lot better for underwater shooting than the Scarlet X.
