Traveling with a Gates

Has anyone got any brilliant and innovative ways of traveling with a large Gates housing? My pelican case is no longer an option as they are too heavy and luggage restrictions are so strict. I would love to hear any creative suggestions. Anyone had success with hand luggage.

I put my camera inside my big old Light & Motion Bluefin housing, remove the handles, and just carry it on completely bare except for a lens cap. I've done quite a few flights like this, and haven't had a problem so far, even though I had a pretty heavy Lowepro carry-on backback as well. One of those nice boys crewing a British Airways flight to Australia even squealed with delight when he saw it.

use mine for a Patima Smart III housing and can also fit a lot of extras. This case also doubles as a cart to which you can stack your other luggage or cases and is the legal dimensions
for a carry on. If you search on the web, you can find it for under $100.

Furthermore, Julia is in Australia, where the airport can be a bit draconian about weight. The PC is 5kg empty. At the most, one can put maybe 7kg stuff in depending on airlines and whether they weigh the bags.

Be careful though with smaller planes as the bag won't fit in the overhead locker or the seat in front and I have been in a few awkward situations where the cabin crew said they would take it for me and she could barely lift it....
It's never easy.....

It's actually funny you answered this. Its actually a Z1 housing that used to be owned by Hollywood divers, you can still make out the yellow writing on the housing.Hi Julia, we have many ways of traveling with Gates housings. Please let us know what housing and accessories you are wanting to travel with and we can make suggestions.
I am just taking the bare minimum, standard port and monitor, would love to take fathom port but its just will be way too heavy. I have been thinking about stripping the housing down and seeing if it will snuggly fit my Low-Pro for carry on, but if I do that my 5d mark 2 sadly may have to stay home.
Look forward to any suggestions

Another top travel tip I have is to get a Lowepro "Orion Mini" beltpack. I usually cram about 8kg of dense and valuable stuff such as hard drives and batteries into it, as well as passport, phone etc., but it's just small enough to get generally overlooked as your main carry-on item. Never been challenged over it in several years and if they ever tell me it qualifies as a 2nd carry-on item I'll tell them it's a well-padded money belt.

Unfortunately, when taking a hopper from San Diego to LAX, there really is no room for carry ons and they give you that valet ticket. Then as we march out to the plane, I explain to the baggage person that it has fragile gear in it and ask if he would load it last. They always say yes but, even then, I don't board the plane and just stand there so they see me watching and then put my carry on last so nothing is bouncing on top of it. This has served me well.
