I saw this small octopus (3-4 cm) on a night dive in the Tulamben area. Does anyone know what species it is?

Think you'll need to catch it and grow it for a while in a tank to ever find out

Thanks, Jim. That was more or less the answer I expected. Not hoping for though, but juvenile octopus seems to be quite hard to determine to species.

Looks much like the one in "Reef Creature ID Tropical Pacific" bottom of Page 417 except yours has more Chromatophores evident.

I think the pupil is the right shape for a Octopus juvenile but not a match for a Bobtail/Bottletail Squid.
