"Thank you for looking over my portfolio. If you could send me a link to the portal so I can review it that would be helpful. In addition, please let me know about the compensation for the use of my photograph. I will get back to you as soon as possible after this with my answer to your kind request."
So..how did I do? HOw is this for a start to the conversation?
Thanks for your help - DiverPam

A charity contacted me asking if they could use some images for a book...they had no budget etc etc etc. Photographers were donating for 'good exposure' (yeah, that one again) so a polite reply indicating how much use right would be, and why I charged was sent.
No surprises...nothing came back...and then out of the blue an email from the 'no budget' charity arrived. They couldn't find the subject elsewhere and had suddenly found some money...
Stand your ground. Be polite but firm when it comes to asking for payment. If they really want your image, they will find the money. Just like they do for the CEO's salary.

A new one happenned to me the other day: They asked me for pictures to be included in a "fine print" book AND for money to be included in the book!!!
You had me laughing out loud on this one! Thanks for the additional stories guys and encouragement to stand my ground.

....They can't steal it if it is watermarked...
Well they can infringe...but if so, one can add a percentage for flagrancy to the fee...I did just that with one infringer and increased the fee by x4. They paid.
