The bad news: I finally figured out that the Nikon 105VR is so fat that it won't fit in my compound Seatool port (The dedicated one-piece port for the 105 has a larger ID)
The good news: The Signa 150mm macro is not as fat (3.1 vs. 3.3) and my compound port is long enough to fit a Sigma 150.

So I can't use my Kento 2x TC with the 105 which is Alex's preferred method to get greater than 1:1 so I am thinking of purchasing the 150mm ans using my Subsee (+5 and +10) with it.

any experiences or ideas out there?

Tom

PS: I shoot a D-300

I have been using the 150 for a while now. It is good for shy fish but much harder to hold steady than the shorter macros. You also take a pretty got hit on contrast and saturation shooting through more water. I also get a lot of movement unless I shoot at my highest synch speed which is 250. With practice you can get pretty good shots but shorter lenses shooting through less water will give you a much clearer/sharper image.

I should have added this benefit; Shooting it wide open, or nearly wide open, you can get beautifully soft backgrounds (bokeh) and really isolate the critter or just a small part of the critter, almost to the point of it being a special effect.

Thanks dave. When using a diopter I usually shoot as high an f/stop as possible and 1/250 or even 1/325. Have you tried this?

I use Nikon 105+Subsee 10+ and I'm very happy! Nice results in xtreme macro and If you use a fiber optic snoot will fix perfect!!
