Some six weeks ago my D300s sank into the abyss: just a few yards off a reef in the Sudanese Red Sea my camera escaped to fall hundreds of fathoms into the depths of that hot, salty and expanding sea. This is what I rescued:

Hi Tim,
It took me forever to find the reply button in the new layout. (Good excuse ?) Just for the record, you were doing all right before Neptune took your camera. So I have to ask, has the pain receded far enough that you can talk about it. Did you have a tether, were you accosted by a mermaid? What happened?

Hi Tim,
Like the Whip Coral Gobies had a great deal of fun with them in Philippines earlier this year and with this little chap. The red big eyes are very striking against the blue. I'm not sure of it's Asperger's or incipient Alzheimer's, but I've also had some trouble with the new style (and why on earth am I the only person to have "0 warning points" added to my profile?)...

... the pain is deep, but partly assuaged by the financial pain of my new D800 and a Nauticam housing that arrived on Friday!

My D300s was lost in the clipping/unclipping confusion of swimming to a RIB, then being asked to swim off again and wait for the next load. Unfortunate (and amazing) that the reefs in south Sudan go straight down to 500m or so. I followed the housing to 15m, but it was then falling pretty fast and I gave up before damaging myself.

I guess that the mermaids (do Sudanese mermaids wear the Hijab? Or the Burqa? Weird thought...) have it, and if the Zen dome hasn't imploded they should negotiate an advertising deal with Ryan.

The hammerhead sharks showed up time and again for the rest of our trip, and I had to hide my dive signals (the underwater equivalent of biting your tongue) as my buddy played with his D3x, enjoying his snapshots, even if they were of me...

Yeah! My second trip on Royal Evolution, and my third to the Sudan, to the waters of "Say hi! Say 'bye..." to the sharks...
