Has anyone ever had their photos displayed publicly? How do you go about having your images displayed in a coffee shop, bank, library, restaurant, etc. I see photos displayed in a lot of places locally and I'd like to figure out how to do this.

Its pretty simple. Either have some ready made pieces or find out where you can get them printed/framed and at what cost as to make sure you can make the commitment. Then approach the owner or manager of the venue, itroduce yourself and suggest an exhibit. BE ready to show some samples of your work, for example on an ipad. Oftentimes venues such as the ones you suggested will be delighted to have underwater photography cheer up their walss. In some cases, coffee shops or resturants will ask to take an commission, typically of 20-40% of any sales made. Make sure to draft some sort of simple contract that states whatever you agreed upon. Look for community a.k.a. publically operated spaces, such as Community Theatre lobbies, Libraries, Coummunity Arts Council galleries. Often they have a call for entries around this time of the year for next year's shows. Years ago, our Photo Society held a show in a Community Art Gallery Space. You have to have verything ready to hang; they have no money for framing. Usually a plain black frame with white matt for everything is your best route. Good luck!

Also do not forget hotels. Have a colleague who makes quite a bit of money from selling images
to hotels to have either in their lobby or in their rooms.

Just make sure that your images are strong: there's a lot of competition out there!
Unless they're really colourful, macro images don't appeal to non-divers in the way that scenic shots and charismatic effing megafauna (this is actually a technical zoological term!) do.
Don't get downhearted if the response is poor at first...
