What chance does a fishery have with this operating in it?

Thanks Damon.

I just sent this email:

Dear Minister Watson.

I love diving the great barrier reef, most of all the spots in the world, I have ever been.

Please protect your oceans from mega factory fishing boats, such as the FV Margiris.

I want to see plentiful life, next time I return to your glorious oceans!

Thanks

Super trawlers take everything - everything. They drag 600 metre nets and process 250 tonnes of marine life a day - A DAY! They are known to have decimated fish stocks In West Africa and have been banned. Sadly too late. And now one is heading my way.

Please take a couple of minutes and go to www.greenpeace.or/australia/eng (sorry don't know how to make a link) and sign the petition.

I know petitions seem a little quaint, but politics here in Australia are strange at the moment. The government has a fragile hold on numbers in parliament, and we are heading to an election next year. This means they are listening, particularly if you take just a little extra time to personalize the green peace letter.

Cheers, Jenny

Hi Damon, I didn't see this post? I was so furious when I saw the greenpeace notice, I just banged out a similar shout out. Emailing Bourke is a great idea, I'll do that immediately. Apparently the Magris is heading towards the pristine waters off Tasmania - what genius is making these decisions? I think I'm going to vomit.

600m nah the nets are 2.5km's, it isn't a trawler its a Purse Seine hauler!
I am so mad about this, its a disgrace!
They have a purchased a quota for 18,000,000(thats kg) 18 million kgs from some @rsehole pro in tasmania for striped tuna! (skipjack to americans).
Thats bad enough but I have suspicion that this boat will leave our shores loaded up with big sthn Blueys frozen up after cashing their Stripeys.
Even the local tuna pros are scream mad about this- Burkie needs his head kick in for this stupidity! might wake him up!
Labor party what a bunch of crooks cashing in before the next election- they know how it's going to go, be lucky to hold the public service vote.....
This boat would make a great wreck dive!
These things should be outright outlawed from being wrighted!

Oh my, 2.5 km, it is obscene. This is what I wrote -

"Dear Minister Bourke,

Firstly, congratulations on your recent decision to create a large marine park. I was really relieved. I understand how difficult it is to strike the right balance between protecting the environment and supporting economic activity which in the end supports the standard of living we are so lucky to enjoy here in Australia. And of course, the two, environment and the economy, are deeply inter dependent. So well done. Frankly, I wouldn't have your job for quids.

But it is your job, and now you are going to have to make decisions about that super trawler currently prowling around Australian waters. I cannot see how this operation can, in any way, be a positive thing. Are there jobs involved? Spin off technological advances? Exceptional taxation revenue?

I'd like to propose that the Australian Government ban super trawlers from operating in Australian waters. Pretty simple really. Please let me know what you think."

I expect unleashing DamonA would be more effective, but you have to do something.

Nice balanced letter Jenny, much better than a rant.

I do agree this monster of a ship is a real worry, what concerns me most is the sheer volume of by-catch that it would take.

Hi Damon,

sorry I'm not looking to offend "I've seen the unleashed DamonA posting on DiveOz as DA and its not a pretty sight!" was just meant as a tongue in
cheek observation. You are so right that this is not DiveOz and the standard of etiquette/moderation here is so much better. Unfortunately all I have
to go by is what I have read in the past on that site.

Cheers,

Suggesting someones oppinion or idea is a "rant", to me is offensive.

What's diveoz got to do with that on this forum, here and now?

All I can see in your comment is tar and feathers, a stitch job -" Unfortunately all I have
to go by is what I have read in the past on that site."

Considering I joined this forum to get information about UW photography and share a like mindness- maybe even make new friends!

- your comments don't help that much, already being my own worst enemy, thru lack of english language skills.....

You want inside?

Hi Damon

Sorry for the late reply, this was in my spam system, go figure.

I know you did not start that way, but that’s how it ended up. I have my eye on others as well.

Sorry it came to this.

Cheers

Neil

Neil,

I didn't start like that, just a few types there got the better of me.

Hope things improve now ,

Pretty much the same sidewinding your pulling on me right now!!!!!!!

I've stayed in tune with the site, which isn't rating well and certainly couldn't be name "diveoz" honestly- more like divevic!

Talks about rebreathers/drysuits/trimix and other highend/elite forms of diving seem to hold the mainframe of discussion, even if they are still underwater cyclist when you actual dive with these "champions".... some of which didn't even start as skindivers and have terrible aquanaughtical ablities and are horribly unfit/overweight! Nothing that makes diving mainstream popular and here its sad the rec turnout compare to euro zone or usa.

Seems to me personally, paid for comment dominates totally. And its chorus of baiting sychophants!

Me, I was a kid that skindived after 10y.o use to catch the bus to manly wharf 441 to look at sea horses, john dory and yellowtailed kings, even mack tuna.... my motives are clear as crystal, I grew up with diving and it has my heart....I still feel safetest solo diving, fish almost smile at me now, because they know how I feel about them, a guardian, a true human- not perfect!
I used to spearfish now its only a camera, Its dumb people that think fish are stupid!

Having the surname Alagic, half danube/ irish celtic/roman and having redhair, I have learned alot about the anglo-saxon outlook/hegemony on 1stworld humanity, oneday this will change.

The platitudes that many hide behind, are being exposed as the level of understanding in this world is increasing, I am an optomist about humans. Soon we will get back our "likeness" connection to nature- probably as this corrupt capitalist system dies its long welcomed death.

Next time you make a personal comment- you'll get no reply at all. Mr Peake' Posted Image

There was a poll this morning on Radio 3aw Talkback and 97% said no to the trawler....I will call them tomorrow morning pointing them to this article...

Those living in Australia why not do the same? If they get enough calls, they might kick up a fuss and insist on answers in true 3aw fashion....

Had a listen to the 3AW mornings slot on pod-cast the poll result was heartening but will it translate into
some consistent public pressure on the decision makers.

AFMA needs to be investigated, it's legitimacy is questionable.

It was us ALL!!!!! they OBEYED! they serve us, from now on!

But we have to be active, epathetic and remain engaged! use our hearts and minds.

SO GOOD NEWS MATE- DESTRUCTION HAS BEEN avioded for 24months............
WOOOOHOHOOOOOOOOO!

good news this morning as the Australian parliament has banned one of the largest fishing trawlers in the world, the Dutch owned Margiris, from exploiting Australian waters for at least two years. Politicians have rightly demanded more research is needed to look into the full effects this super trawler will inevitably have on local fish populations, other marine species and the wider marine ecology. For more information on the inspiring campaign that secured this unprecedented success, visit: http://stopthetrawler.net/

Was feeling terribly depressed about this, but karma has feed back and we won it- so grateful to hear this!
